She Who Watches

Race: Dark Elf   Proficiencies: Religion, History   She Who Watches, The Last Temptation, The Spider Queen, the patron deity of the bloodthirsty and mysterious Dark Elves goes by many names.   Among the minor gods, the origin of She Who Watches is the most mysterious. While most of the surface races question whether the nefarious Drow exist at all, few question the existence of their god. Some believe she is a daughter of Vyshareth (or even Vyshareth herself), others believe she was once an Elf that was elevated to her position by the scheming Lord of Games, and yet others believe she is adherent to no god and was instead manifested from the dark thoughts lingering in the minds of mortals.   If the crazed ramblings of those who have returned from the Underdark are to be believed, the Drow themselves believe her to be every bit as ancient as the Major Gods, and that she simply saw the endeavors of the other gods as foolish. To the Dark Elves, She Who Watches embodies everything that a Drow should aspire to, and a true Dark Elf should seek to emulate her and gain her favor in every manner possible.   She Who Watches is the deity of many dark and evil concepts. She represents manipulation, schemes, murder, usurpers, and suffering, all things which the Drow delight in wholeheartedly. To worship She Who Watches is to embrace the forbidden and immoral, to revel in giving in to one's darker impulses, and it is for this reason that so many fear the Drow, for every horrible tale accounting of one's interaction with their species is rife with imagery of torture and pain, all the while being unable to stop hearing the cackling laughter of the Drow echoing through the dark tunnels of the Underdark.   It is not only the Drow that worship She Who Watches, however. While the great majority on the surface fear and despise her, there are those who see her in a different light. To some, she represents not only temptation but freedom, not only pain but liberating exhilaration, not only cold murder but ambition. An assassin may pray to She Who Watches for success, an outcast may look to her for comfort, a deviant may celebrate her for acceptance of their taboos. But make no mistake, worship of She Who Watches twists the mind and soul, until one becomes happy to be entangled in her web, unable to escape the darkness of her mind. She is called The Last Temptation for, once you seek her out, the inevitable result is a disregard for why something is forbidden, no longer feeling temptation as you wholeheartedly indulge in any depravity your heart desires.
