Sachione, God of Commerce

Old enough to be worshiped in multiple nations but not so old and prominent that he possesses one consistent name across those nations, the God of Commerce represents an arguably minor but nonetheless vital aspect of the modern world: trade and economics. In the ports of Chal, he is known as Sachione, a patron of fair winds, safe travel, and sea trade, given lipservice and pleas alike by sailors depending on their situation. In the steppes and deserts of Arrboth, his aspect as Dhanya represents much the same thing, albeit for nomads and caravanners rather than sailors. In either case, however, his name is most commonly invoked by merchants and peddlers, those who most directly resonate with the concept he embodies.   Many scholars and theologians have noted the similarities between Sachione and Caerev, another god commonly worshiped in the two nations, and the comparison is not without merit. Both have an apparent goal of the betterment of their followers and society as a whole, and both often do so with significant consequences for the wider world. The two gods agree on some points, including their dislike of the stifling influences of Remphos, God of Time, but they also have their disagreements - unsurprisingly, perhaps, given one is a god of merchants and the other a god of thieves. While Caerev's inventions and schemes can enhance or even revolutionize trade, they can also cause harm to the honest and hardworking laymen that Sachione supports. Stories of squabbles between the three gods are as much allegories for the conflict between society, progress, and nature as they are about the genuine disagreements that they regularly have, with two often siding against the third on any given point of contention.   Representing the exchange of goods and services as he does, it is no wonder that Sachione is heavily defined by his relationships with others even as far as other gods are concerned. Apart from Time and Invention, his aspect as a god of fair weather and travel also puts him at odds with Atraziah, God of Storms. It is said that he cannot defeat Atraziah - or most of the other gods, for that matter - in direct combat, and thus resorts to the bartering and negotiation that he does best, and that these tenuous agreements result in the balance between fair and foul weather across The Eye. It is hard to say how much truth there is to this, however, since any storm that occurs at an inopportune time can be explained away as a breakdown of negotiations, or as being beneath the god's concerns.   Finally, there is the matter of his aspect as a god of good fortune. While this holds some overlap with his connections to fair weather, it also extends to general luck, though his gifts are not without conditions. Not unlike the way Dwarves see The Bearer, Sachione does not support gambling and recklessness, but the notion that hard work with honest intentions should be rewarded. It could be said that this, too, extends to the god's idea of fair exchanges, in the sense that the hardworking should be compensated for their troubles, and the more they must struggle, the more they deserve to gain for it. If the God of Commerce has his way, all who suffer undeserved hardship and continue to persevere receive recognition for their efforts and meet their goals, or at least find other opportunities in the process.   While Sachione has a domain in Yore as many other gods do, a vast market with hidden connections to many civilizations across the planes, he actually spends very little time there. Most of his time, instead, is spent in the travel and trade he represents, following the same principles that he would have his adherents live by. Being less of a fighter than other gods and frequently leaving the safety of his domain are not reasons to underestimate him, however. Along with his unnatural charisma and cunning, the god counts a variety of dragons and horned horses of legend among his heralds and supporters, never leaving him wanting for powerful allies.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The universal symbol of the God of Commerce is the weather vane, an important tool for trade and travel across The Eye. In the hands of his faithful, it is said that it represents not just the flow of favorable winds, but also the flow of wealth and good fortune, leading them towards opportunity.

Tenets of Faith

Sachione teaches his followers to seek wealth and the opportunity to make a fortune, but his principles are not entirely selfish in nature. They emphasize the benefits of fair deals rather than profiting from underhanded tactics and deception; according to them, there is always profit to be made from the flow of goods to those who need them more rather than from mere ignorance. Truly faithful believers in the God of Commerce can be trusted to offer goods and services that benefit both parties in equal measure - if only there was a method of telling for certain whether a given merchant was such a believer...

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Wherever and whenever he appears, whether Sachione or Dhanya, the God of Commerce represents the ideal merchant for the region he is in, from hairstyle to attire. The most notable tell that he is present is his mode of transportation, as regardless of whether it is a ship or wagon, it is always in pristine condition, shining like gold, and even more strikingly, it is capable of flight. There are some who theorize that he only has a single vehicle that is capable of transformation given these common properties.
