Caerev, God of Invention

"Can I...? Oh, I can!"
The name 'Caerev the Craftsman' has persisted since the dawn of civilization, and for good reason, given the god's ties to civilization itself. Since there have been minds able to conceive of devising new ways to solve their problems, the God of Invention has been there to support them and watch their progress. He seems to care little for what type of progress - medical, agricultural, military, architectural, it does not matter as much as the ideation and creativity that brings it forth. Even intangible forms of progress such as improvements in mathematics, strategy, and philosophy fall under his purview. To his followers, he is a motivator that spurs along innovation and the betterment of society.   Those simply have greater knowledge of his domains, however, know that the betterment of society is not necessarily one of his concerns either. To many, Caerev is instead 'Caerev the Crafty', trickster god of scheming and thievery. Again, he does not care about the results nearly as much as the creative process, and quick thinking and planning are just as important for scammers and robbers as they are to architects and military strategists. After all, he was there to support the old elemental civilizations through their cruel and cutthroat scheming as well. As one of the few gods who resonates with such concepts, he holds a unique position as a god worshiped both in polite society and in the shadows.    Even in his aspect as a god of societal progress and invention, his position is still controversial to some. Exploiting and straying from the natural order, causing harm to nature, and even putting other people at risk can all be done in the name of 'progress', after all, and his more fanatical followers shy away from none of these. Dangerous experimentation, deforestation, and poisoning of entire ecosystems can and have all occurred in Caerev's name, putting him at odds with more than a few of his fellow gods. Remphos, God of Time, is his most outspoken opposition in this regard, asserting that balance must be kept between seeking new knowledge and sacrificing parts of the world to do it.   Still, Caerev finds worship in many corners of The Eye. In Chal, he is the de facto patron of the alchemical industry, with all its miracles, flaws, and foibles, and has been since the time of King Laren. In Arrboth, he sits just below Mana at the intersection between beauty, craftsmanship, and inspiration. Even the Dwarves pay measured respect to the God of Invention, wary as they are of his darker side. Beyond them, adventurers across the planes often find themselves thanking him when they come to creative solutions to their myriad and varied problems. Even Remphos himself is said to have sought his help in the past, respecting his skills even while disagreeing with his methods.   As for his domain, Caerev only has The Vessel. A bizarre contraption larger than a city traveling constantly through the Outer Chaos of Yore, The Vessel is as impressive as it is unstable. It is tirelessly maintained through a patchwork of fixes by both Caerev himself and his coterie of petitioners and automatons, to the point where it can look completely different, both inside and out, within a matter of months. Despite all this, through fate, some miracle, or the god's own genius, it has been said that The Vessel has never fully fallen apart. Even if one finds and boards it, of course, seeking an audience with the constantly-busy god can be an effort worthy of its own epic tale.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The agreed-upon holy symbol of Caerev is, fittingly, a simple and practical toolbelt. The tools on the belt are irrelevant - or, more accurately, what tools any given follower has will depend on their own goals and expertise. Most worshipers of the God of Invention don't particularly care whether this mundane-looking item actually reveals their faith, and in many cases, they actively seek to avoid such recognition.

Tenets of Faith

The tenets of Caerev have almost nothing to do with what to do, and everything to do with how it should be done. He encourages his adherents to think outside the box and show creativity in all things, as nothing pleases him more than solved problems and brilliant solutions. Similarly, his tenets say to never accept failure; until death, there is always a solution to be found, and a way to make the most of a setback. Finally, his followers are to seek mastery in their chosen crafts, and settle for nothing less.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

It can be rather hard to identify Caerev on sight, as his appearance shifts dramatically across cultures and centuries. These days, he typically takes the form of a stereotypical artificer, with goggles, overalls, work boots, and a well-stocked toolbelt. The only obvious tell that distinguishes him from a mortal is a close look at his eyes, which reveals a cacophony of diagrams and formulas swirling within them. When he is depicted religiously, the diagrams and formulas (typically those ideas that the artist is most proud of or inspired by) instead appear as a cloud behind him, encircling his head.
