Realm of Yore

The Chaos of Creation

One of the two Greater Realms beyond the planes, Yore is considered by many to be the source of all that exists. A vast and infinite dimension where anything imaginable can spontaneously come into existence. In some ways, this seems to be literal: planar travelers have discovered that its vast realms have a clear connection to dreams and ideas, and ideas seem to hold power in and of themselves here.

Traits

  • Gravity: 'Down' is typically in the direction of the nearest consistent mass, or matches the intent of a given area's ruler. In less structured areas, the realm takes on Subjective Directional Gravity.
  • Greater Realm: When using the Planar Travel rules, Yore uses 8th level summoning ability difficulties rather than 5th.
  • Overwhelming: In the outer chaos of Yore, the healing powers of Creation suffuse reality. All beings present act as if they have Regeneration 17. However, the healing effects continue even when they have full Life Points, up to twice their total, which act as extra Life Points as per the Vitality spell. When a character reaches 50% more LP than they should normally have, they must make a Physical Resistance Check once per round against 80 or physically burst. If they reach 90% more or the maximum, this increases to 120.
  • Magic: In the outer chaos of Yore, magic that creates matter, energy, or creatures is permanent regardless of its usual duration, but creatures created are out of the control of the caster. Anywhere on the plane, spells of the Path of Creation (including subpaths or free access spells a caster uses with it) take effect at one level higher than they are cast at, while spells on the Path of Destruction suffer the opposite effect.

Geography

Unless a planar traveler has a specific destination in mind, The Realm of Yore is an extremely dangerous destination. Apart from the suffusion of life-giving energies that makes it all but impossible to survive, the area known as the Outer Chaos is a realm where matter and energy of all forms appear and transform spontaneously. Landscapes of anything solid can form, from earth to Light to flesh, and burn, melt away, or grow into something different within hours or days. Bursts of flame or electricity wipe away areas the size of cities in an instant. No civilization or control is possible, but to many regions of Yore, this chaotic miasma is just the sea outside of their shores.   In this realm where ideas are given form, Aeons are born and strengthen off the concepts they represent. Many of these powerful beings have carved their own domains out of Yore, forcing order onto regions under their control. These vary to the tastes and capabilities of any given Aeon, but no domain is as infamous as that of the Aeon known as the Idea of Evil, progenitor of demons. A world where Darkness meets Fire, this gruesome realm seems as if it could genuinely be formed of hatred and nightmares.   Given the existence of the Dreamlands, one of the largest and most varied regions of Yore, this may not be far from the truth. This realm seems to hold a connection to the dreams and ideas of sentient beings, made coherent by the shared experiences of mortals. Here, otherworldly facsimiles of locations on The Eye or even civilizations within the planes exist, with their features varying based on subconscious will. While cities can be extremely accurate for the most part, uninhabited areas tend to be more chaotic and imprecise. Mountains tower at indeterminate heights, plains stretch unusually short or long distances, and forests take on strange spatial properties that can literally turn around those who try to venture through them.

Fauna & Flora

Very few creatures can survive the outer chaos for long, native or otherwise, and yet strange beings frequently emerge from the boundaries of other realms, created from nothing just as everything else there is. It is said by many that even the first Aeons are born this way from small sparks of ideas. Most of these beings do not survive long, however, as the native life of the domains they encroach upon is often even more threatening. Supernatural beings that follow an Aeon, or at least thrive in its realm, often hold similarities to that Aeon, giving them both significant power and advantage within its domain. For instance, while an Aeon of justice may have followers trained in the most direct forms of combat, an Aeon of rebirth may have followers that can regenerate from the most brutal or wounds or change form.   The Dreamlands are a somewhat different matter. 'Haunted' by caricatures of mortal desires, hopes, and fears ranging from the petty to the profound, these areas are relatively lively in their own ways. In many senses, however, it is the safest and most peaceful part of Yore, and many areas are actively idyllic, filled with vibrant plants and harmless, endearing creatures. At the same time, it is one of the more accessible parts of Yore given the access born of powers or spells related to dreams, and strange visitors are far more common than in the more dangerous reaches of the realm. Demons can occasionally stalk the Dreamlands, and dreamers themselves can even be a threat for those physically in this strange place - they are often at no personal risk and may hold power significantly over what they could possibly wield in the waking world.

Natural Resources

Where everything is and nothing isn't, the main issue with acquiring whatever one may desire from Yore is actually finding it. This is often an exercise in futility akin to finding a book in a completely unorganized library. Venturing into the domains of Aeons can significantly narrow down such a search, but holds massive risks of its own. Much of the time, objects or materials from the safer Dreamlands have a significant chance of being only temporary solidifications of imagination that hold neither power nor substance outside of it. Most of the time, the 'resources' acquired from Yore are those temporarily drawn in by various Creation magics, as many scholars believe this power directly taps into this realm.
