The Idea of Evil

"You could say to the universe, this is not fair. And the universe would say: Oh, isn't it? Sorry."
Terry Pratchett
Evil is not real; it isn't a state of matter, or a form of energy, or some fundamental force of reality. At the same time, however, neither is 'Beauty', nor 'Peace', nor even 'Ingenuity', and this makes little difference when it comes to the formation of an Aeon. Like any other god, The Idea of Evil is created by the thoughts and beliefs of the living, and in particular the subjective belief that things can be truly evil at all. Along with their gods of justice and order and protection, the denizens of The Eye received a god of all that they felt was wrong, and they did everything in their power to reject it.   But permanently killing an Aeon is not an easy feat, especially while its concept still exists. When deprived of a name, he took this as a badge of honor, a title akin to the Elemental Lords. When killed in battle, he would only laugh at the futility of the effort. And when the gods saw fit to banish him from The Eye, he may as well have thanked them for the opportunity before going on to create his own domain within Yore, known by many names, but most commonly simply as Hell. For the most aggravating, most infuriating, and most chilling thing The Idea of Evil ever did was embrace his destiny with open arms and without a single ounce of reservation.   The nature of evil requires no explanation, as it is something instinctually known, but the identity and personality of its deity is a subject of more debate. Some believe that he acts the way he does because he knows that sympathy for him or justification of his actions would devalue and deny his very nature. Others consider the positive merits of his existence, that having a universal idea of what is wrong and what is worthy of punishment is beneficial for society as a whole, even if it ultimately holds little weight. Still, it is unclear whether The Idea of Evil thinks the same way of his own role and ultimately believes himself to be doing good, or simply takes joy in the act itself.   Regardless of his exact reasons and his lack of proper worshipers, his actions clearly serve to continue his existence. His domain serves both as a place of punishment and torment for mortal souls and the birthplace of demons, the instruments of his will. While he remains in Yore, these demons roam the shadows of The Eye and the planes, committing acts of deceit, violence, and temptation purely for the sake of doing evil. As creations that exist solely for this purpose, few stray away from his 'ideals' (though some claim to be in retirement while not actively doing harm), and even fewer directly oppose them.   As for the few mortals that do pay tribute to the embodiment of evil itself, most are familiar stories of deals for power, wayward pride, desperation, and madness. Those who have been declined answers from other gods but stubbornly believe their path is right have a way of convincing themselves that the god of opposition might have a point, after all. Aspiring followers will find no true religious rites, but demons have no issues coming up with all manner of nefarious acts for them to commit in his name. The stories of such wayward souls, too far gone to realize they are taking the wrong path even when pushed to commit such atrocities, are some of the most dark and twisted The Eye has to offer.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Cultists of The Idea of Evil will typically just desecrate the most relevant holy symbol they can find; breaking the wings off a stained glass angel, sullying a mirror, or taking the symbol of a broken heart, for instance. Of course, those who would directly worship such an entity are rarely sane, so their ideas of how to represent and exalt their patron can vary greatly.

Tenets of Faith

The Idea of Evil sees no need for mortal worship, but asks his demons to perpetuate evil in all ways. By enacting heinous acts of evil themselves, they spread fear and solidify the notion that wrongness and injustice is truly something that exists as part of the world.
