Republic of Suvelka
The Republic of Suvelka is a member of the Cloriadmen Confederation and one of the largest by land area, though much of their territory is inhospitable moorlands. Suvelka controls most of the Moarea and Builen Rivers, which allows them to be a powerful mercantile state, though their access to the Bay of Cloriadme is limited by the Republic of Terales' strong hold on the Saltmarsh Isles.
History
The Republic of Suvelka, as a Cloriadmen nation, can trace its ancestry back to the Cloriadmen Genesis, and event which saw the mingling of ancient Metsamish and proto-Fremedhian peoples after both had been pushed into the slatmarsh (the Metsamish by the proto-Fremedhians and the proto-Fremedhians by the Empire of Oleandron). The region which would later come to be Suvelka, while not in the saltmarsh itself, is primarily located in the High Swamp, a series of swampy areas, which, while not true highlands are well above sea level, unlike the low-lying saltmarsh. Thus, the region had a distinct ecosystem which prompted close collaboration among the various tribes which came to inhabit the high swamp. The suvelkan tribes would lead rather insular lives, similar to the other Cloriadmen, mingling with them over the next thousand years. They had next to no interaction with the Kingdom of Fraspika, and tribal bands of suvelkan origin only clashed with that kingdom one time. However, they would see the effects of Fraspika, as many formerly powerful tribes were weakened by the Kingdom, allowing the suvelkan tribes to extend their lands to the very borders of the saltmarsh.
Things would only change in the early 1200s, as the rising Kingdom of Ambolaine encroached on suvelkan lands. Before this, the suvelkan tribes had been disorganized and not united whatsoever, fighting amongst one another often*. Now, threatened by Ambolaine, many came together in a confederation, a loose union of different tribes under no clear leadership. While some lands were lost, overall the experiement was a success and placed the Suvelkans in a strong position and caused the confederation to remain together even as Ambolaine began falling apart. The year of the first meeting of tribes, 1234, is traditionally considered the date of formation of the Republic, though it remained tribal for several more decades. Suvelka would expand slightly over the years, mostly just absorbing other tribes of the region who had not joined the early confederation. In the 1320s, Suvelka would reform its government into a more unitary state, modeled after the nearby Stewardship of Teveska. Since Suvelka was independent, the ruling council decided to declare a republic, led by a president, as opposed to a steward. While oligarchic, they large number of small tribes and rising men of wealth within the state has made Suvelka much more democratic than the other Cloriadmen states.
Suvelka aided the Duchy of Wellenia against the Kingdom of Fraspika in 1400, for which they recieved trading concessions, but these were eventually sold off due to their unprofitability. More lasting was the Cloriadmen confederation, which Suvelka joined to aid Wellenia. Similar in structure to the early government of Suvelka, many in the nation have been hoping for a similar path, and a union of Cloriadmen nations. Suvelka has been a strong proponent of a republican confederation and in reducing tariffs among members, and muhc of the nation supports these measures.
*They are only referred to as suvelkan tribes due to generally staying in the high swamp, as opposed to the tribes which straddled the swamp and saltmarsh, or those further west. During this period, and into the modern age there remains no substantial difference between them and other Cloriadmen.
