Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names, or surnames, change per generation. Female children take on the first name of their mother, whereas male children take on the first name of their fathers. If the father is unknown, then male children will take on the mother's father or her brother's first name as their surname. If there are no recent male relations, then the son typically goes without a surname.
For example Freya's daughter, Hela, is Hela Freyadottir. Whereas her son, Baldur, is Baldur Odinson.
