The Long Northern Peace

The period between 2209 AF and 2617 AF in known as the Long Northern Peace and the first three hundred years or so until 2530 AF is also called the Golden Age of Anoomenon, for it was that city which dominated the politics of the Earth during this time.   The rulers of Anoomenon moved swiftly following the conclusion of the war of the Mating Game to establish launch facilities which could replace the loss of Green Atoll Station. Recognising that their own limited capabilities could not be easily extended, they invested heavily in the creation of a new (relatively) low lattitude site at Sonnring which grew so rapidly that it was granted the rights of an independent city by 2333 AF. This proved to be a far sighted move as bold as the original creation of Green Atoll Station and similarly successful.   The Grey Kings of Anoomenon quickly rivaled and then surpassed the influence of Modyran, due in part to their famed cunning and also the technological mastery of the caste of scientific philosophers who ranked high in the aristocracy of the city. Their lengthy and legendary negotiations with the Princes of the Moon are case studies in the art of complex deals and subtle politics.   The Grey Kings opened up the Solar Ovens in this age (shown in the image at the head of the article), a final fruitful realisation of the Fusion Tap technology that they had first explored as long ago as 1050 AF, back in the Foundation Age. Their gene engineers developed skills of surpassing brilliance, even if their practices were ethically questionable and they made many wonderful creatures to adorn their court.   Elsewhere, a strange fungal plague known as the Western Rot, took hold in the coastal areas around Aberstone and badly affected agricultural yields between 2325 AF and 2460 AF when a cure was finally made available. In 2349 AF a major fire at Aberstone called simply "the Incineration", ripped the heart out of the city which was already struggling to survive due to the Western Rot. It was abandoned by 2379 AF.   In 2512 AF an earthquake destroyed the aquifer which fed Freewater and that city, also, was abandoned within five years. Some of its residents joined a project which the Grey Kings had initiated to built a second space elavator at Helsporan, just a relatively small experimental settlement at the time, but one which had grown sufficiently to be given full city rights by 2523 AF.   The dynasty of the Grey Kings came to an end in 2530 AF, after the death of Berick Manderson which is considered to be the end of the Golden Age of Amoomenon but the peace they had wrought still held until 2617 AF, under the aegis of the Anoomenon Great Impartial Court.   These final years of the Long Northern Peace, after the Grey Kings had passed, saw a flowering of artistic endeavours in many fields. The publication of the Collected Works of Zinthrano in 2564 AF was a particular highlight.   The period came to an end when the cities of Gantranne and Entessaminia began the Role Disputes in 2617 AF.
