Moon Pregnancies

The Moon Pregnancies were a sacred rite which was practiced by the religion known as the Enfolders on the world of Magicians' End in the ancient ages before the Sundering.   Using their deep astronomical knowledge the Enfolders were able to accurately predict the time of a Super Conjunction, an event that happens about every hundred years, when the three moons, Lumina, Celestria and Triquetra are perfectly aligned with one another and with the sun and the other major planets.   Prior to the super conjunction, three "celestial" virgins were selected to be the "brides of the moons".   In a special ceremony at an ordinary triple conjunction at least ten months before the Super Conjunction itself, the brides became the "vessels of the moons", each one receiving a "moon pregnancy", an immaculate conception linked to, Lumina, Celestria and Triquetra, via their light focused through a lens.   The term of the false pregnancies, which were induced by special herbs, medicines and arcane rituals, lasted until the Super Conjunction, when all three brides would be delivered of their arcane progeny.   Each "birth" transferred power from the moon to the earth, according to the kind of divine essence believed to emanate from the moon. Thus:-
Moon Appearance Arcane Powers
Triquetra Tiny Violet Arcane secrets, hidden knowledge, transformation and time magic.
Celestria Small Red Passion, war, sacrifice, blood magic and divine judgment.
Lumina Large White Illumination, prophecy, purification and life-giving magic.
The process was entirely abstract and symbolic, since these were not genuine pregnancies, but it was believed to ensure the stability of the realm and to confer powerful magical virtues on the Enfolded One when he accepted the invisible "children" of the three moons as his wards.   Afterwards, the "mothers" were granted honoured places in the ranks of the Enfolders. Often they would go on to be wives of the Enfolded One and might become true biological mothers but this was not always the case.

Components and tools

Some of the details of the way the moon pregnancies worked have been lost over time, but we do have recipes for the herbal potions, musical notation for the incantations and a few relics, such the the one below which is dedicated to Celestria.

The statue, which was recovered from the ruins of the Temple of the Triple Moons at Goolsyn depicts a not entirely human figure, as can be seen from her feet and tail. She is depicted in the early stages of pregnancy and belongs to a mythical species called the Katelathes who were said to serve Celestria as warrior women.

Participants

The induction process involved singing and chanting to accompany a soothing hypnotic drink. False sensations of conception were stimulated in sympathy with the simulated pregnancy.
