Lightstaff
The Lightstaff was the name given to the leader of the Ecclesia of the Old Pale Empire. It is an example of metonymy, since the role takes its name from the ceremonial staff they held in the debating chamber which is shown in the illustration at the head of the article.
As the Empire grew ever greater in size and more complex to administer, power shifted from the Emperor / Empress towards the more overtly political role of the Ecclesia and the Lightstaff in particular.
