Hylacon Character in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Hylacon

The prophet Hylacon is one of the most mysterious figures in the entire history of Magicians' End. He first appeared in Honirham in 750 BPC, preaching of the ways between the worlds and gathering a following of curious mages, impressed with his strange powers and mystic teachings. Although we cannot say this with any certainty, it seems highly likely that Hylacon was in fact one of the Fey, given the weight of later circumstantial evidence.   Hylacon's teachings aligned with the knowledge of the Discontinuum, first imparted in this realm to the followers of the Way of Trinity Moon. In his first revelations, he warned of a coming catastrophe, in which the world would face a threat unlike any they had ever known and he instructed his followers in the ways that they could prepare to meet it.   This was later seen as a prophecy about the Planar Conformation. Scholors within the Stability Council believe that Hylacon's knowledge must have come from a far deeper understanding of the dynamics of the local Discontinuum than is possessed (or at least admittedly possessed) by any living expert today, and that it was this science that allowed him to predict how Magicians' End would be affected   Although in his first manifestation he gained many interested followers and left an important legacy behind him, Hylacon's reputation was greatly enhanced when he made a second coming in 428 BPC, demonstrating either extreme longevity (not to say possible immortality), or that the missing years in between had been spent in distant realms where the passage of time ran more slowly, or some combination of both. In any case, his reappearance lent credibilty to his assertions which this time came with some more urgency. This is when the Hylacon Peoples became established as a group.   Hylacon taught his followers deep truths about the nature of the Discontinuum and the dangers of the coming Planar Conformation and he guided them in the development of plans to protect Magicians' End.   Although he was absent during the violent convulsions that followed from the creation of the Dark Domains and led to the Fall of the Old Pale Empire, he had given the Hylacon Peoples sufficient knowledge for them to begin the construction of the Hylacon Gates in 37 APC, which was the only hope for humans to bring an end to the Breach Wars. Hylacon had not gone missing without good reason. He had been travelling into dangerous and remote planes of existence, researching the life style and habits of the Ancient and Glorious and reflecting on how to counter their particular mode of operation.   Manifesting again on Magicians' Realm in 68 APC he provided vital support for the Locking of the Hylacon Gates which took another six years. He was consumed in a final arcane sacrifice at the Easter Gate on 15th Mald, 74 APC which armed the defences and imprisoned the denizens of the Dark Domains so that they could no longer spread their terror throughout the world.   The 15th of Mald on Magicians' End is now known as Easter Day, after the Easter Gate, which is the keystone of the Hylacon Gates and Hylacon's life and sacrifice are celebrated on all the human inhabited continents of the world.
