Fable Rank/Title in The Cradle of Worlds | World Anvil

Fable

Fable is a title given to the leaders in various districts of Orala-Was. These leaders have control over the bureaucrats and militia for their districts. So in given neighborhoods they are nearly absolute despots. Being overly cruel however has typically lead them to early and strange deaths, often right after having been replaced. A common method is madness and jumping from an upper layer of the city to their death, even when the Fable had precautions to fall safely in case of an accident. They have no control over their selection or de-selection. They are called by public display, usually auras or miraculous events where a symbol of the district hovers above their head for a day. When one is selected, the previous Fable has a corresponding broken symbol above their head. How and why this occurs is unknown, but gave rise to the title Fable due to its story like quality.   While some Fables have been in their position for decades, some have only remained in that position for a week. The most infamous was a drunk, selected one day then got insanely drunk off of free drinks and fell to his death later that same day. The previous Fable was re-instated after that happened. Kyen Stonewall is the longest serving fable, at 300 years old and serving for 150 years he is the fable of the Worm district.   Rejecting the Fable has had some historically awful consequences. From a militia regent found hung by their ankles naked in the square after defying a fable’s orders, to others going mute or loosing feet. Or in the worst case receiving an incurable painful skin condition or death. Most of the bureaucrats and militia will not oppose a new fable, at least not soon and openly.
