Cathedral of St. Barwent
The Cathedral of Barwent is the largest holy house in Daireen, dedicated to the Gods of seafaring, rivers and bridges and is named after St. Barwent. Barwent the Builder was a skilled engineer who designed the bridges spanning the river and played an important role in the design of the city in its early days. It is said that he blessed the bridges, ensuring they will never collapse. Later, Barwent the Builder became the patron saint of The Merchants' Guild and to this day Barwent is honored and clebrated at the start of the trading season.
The Cathedral of Barwent was constructed and funded by the Merchants' Guild of Daireen, who sought to honor their chosen patron saint. Recognizing the vital role Barwent the Builder played in the city’s prosperity and infrastructure, the guild made the cathedral a symbol of their influence and devotion. As the wealthiest and most powerful organization in Daireen, the guild’s decision to build such a monumental structure ensured that their dominance in the city would be immortalized. Over the years, the cathedral has become not only a religious center but also a reminder of the guild's foundational role in Daireen's rise to prominence.
Positioned directly across from the Merchants' Guild on the opposite side of the main canal, the cathedral’s grand structure towers over the city’s skyline. Its design is both imposing and inspiring, with a large nave and aisles leading to shrines dedicated to various deities connected to seafaring, rivers, bridges, trade, and engineering—domains that Barwent himself once guided. The cathedral's centerpiece is a stunning mosaic on the floor, depicting the life and miracles of St. Barwent. In addition to the religious shrines, the cathedral houses a library, home to ancient texts and records of the city’s merchants, as well as an almshouse, serving the poor and homeless of Daireen.
The cathedral becomes a focal point of the city during the season festivals, market events, and the beginning of each new trade season. These large gatherings bring together merchants, traders, pilgrims, and citizens, who come to pray, give thanks, and seek blessings for a prosperous year ahead. The cathedral’s grand hall, with its high ceilings and expansive floor space, is the ideal venue for these events, where speeches, prayers, and blessings are given to ensure favorable weather for sea voyages, successful trade deals, and safe passage through Daireen’s canals and rivers.
The High-Priest of the cathedral, a devout follower of Olanya, the God of Storms and the Sea, holds a position of great power and influence. Fiercely loyal to the Merchants' Guild, the High-Priest oversees all religious functions within the cathedral and ensures that the guild’s wealth and power are honored and upheld in religious ceremonies. In exchange, the Merchants' Guild provides the cathedral with the necessary funding for its upkeep and the High-Priest’s lavish lifestyle. The guild’s support of the cathedral is a key factor in maintaining their favor with the people and securing their influence over the city and the wider Republic of Callaern.
As the Merchants' Guild grows in power, their control over the cathedral strengthens, but not without resistance. Some members of the clergy, particularly those loyal to other gods or rival merchant factions, whisper about the undue influence the guild holds over the High-Priest. There are rumors of secret alliances between rival guilds and a growing schism within the clergy, with some priests even suggesting that the guild's growing dominance might lead to corruption of the spiritual mission of the cathedral. The battle for control of the cathedral threatens to destabilize the balance of power in Daireen.
