The Emberleaf Republic

The Emberleaf Republic, named for its abundance of perpetually autumnally-coloured trees is located in the northwest. With a population of 463 million people spread over 1.5 million square miles, the Emberleaf Republic is the second-largest nation on the continent and the largest democracy. Centuries ago, the people of the Emberleaf Republic (known as Emberites) phased out its old monarchy in favour of a new Democratic system after years of conflict over the line of succession nearly drove the country to destruction. Prior to the succession war, the old kingdom of Eldureia had controlled thousands of miles of territory on the western side of the continent, but had slowly lost control due to its political infighting. The Republic, however, sees little interest in controlling land around the world--instead, the general doctrine of foreign policy centres around economic control and carefully crafted alliances to maintain global power.   Of the 500 largest businesses on the continent, more than half of them originate in the Emberleaf Republic. The proliferation of wealth in the nation does not fully represent the reality for everyone living there. There are classes of wealthy people who live in excess, people with next to nothing, and those in between in a shrinking middle class. Still, for most, the quality of life in the Republic surpasses that of many other nations, and its citizens are among the most educated in the world.   As a nation that primarily uses soft power and economic hegemony to maintain its international interests, the Emberleaf Republic's military is not very large--the nation maintains a standing military for defensive purposes but has effectively negotiated themselves into a position where if attacked, several other nations would be obligated to do the fighting for them.   Life in the Emberleaf Republic is not dangerous in the same way that living in the war-torn Albesian Dominion might be--it has enjoyed relative internal peace for the last century. Yet, its challenges are many. The wealthiest of nations still fails to provide for its poorest, and its lenient attitude towards corporate regulation means that the government turns a blind eye to the actions of its most successful industry titans. As one of the few stable states in Western Boesia, Emberites must decide what their overall role in the world must be.

Tarbach

Tarbach is one of the most visited cities on Boesia. A historical and cultural landmark in of itself, one could spend their entire life inside and never see everything it has to offer. It is the Emberleaf Republic's capital as well as its most populous city, and sits on both sides of the Wedlenberg Strait-- one of two entryways into the Ornfathan Sea. Parts of the city are the peaks of luxury, and others are dangerous places where an underworld of criminals thrive. some Places of note:
  • Federal Circle--the seat of government, which houses the legislature and the Executive Spire.
  • Torvald's Harbour--the harbour on the western side of the strait, known for the extravagant passenger sea-craft that it serves.
  • Evelyn's Harbour--the harbour on the eastern side of the strait features a world-famous street market and a thriving commercial port.
  • Monument Park-- a massive park in the western city that is also home to the Parliamentary Monument--a dedication to the establishment of the nation's current republic.
  • Andervane University--one of the oldest institutions in the world, renowned for its reputation as a difficult school to get into, and an even more difficult one to graduate. Some of the world's brightest minds can be found here
  • Tir's Row--located in the southwestern district beneath streets of regular local shops in a thriving underground market in both senses of the word.
  • The Runway--a double entendre of sorts, the Runway both refers to the famous fashion show that takes place in this massive skyscraper, as well as the plethora of haute couture shops that take residence in the building

Structure

The Emberleaf Republic is a Federal Parliamentary Republic with an individually elected executive (known as a semi-presidential federal parliamentary republic). This means that the Parliament and the President can often be politically opposed. Additionally, each province has a state government with a legislature and a governor (known as a Landeshaupt), though the provinces of the Emberleaf Republic don't have as much autonomy as states in the real-world USA do. There are 6 major political parties that have seats in parliament, which is currently a coalition between the social democratic ELP (Emberite Labour Party) and the centre-left ENDP (Emberleaf New Democratic Party), though the coalition majority is slim. The current president is Leonie Schaffner of the ELP, and is the 63rd person to hold the position. The president can serve up to three five year terms.   Schaffner is fairly well-liked by the country's working class, but is a controversial figure who ran as a reformer but has largely failed to implement her agenda, with the notable exception being a massive rail project.

Culture

The Emberites value what we might call Enlightenment ideals, but many have a somewhat skewed perception of foreigners. As one of the few internally stable countries in the west of the continent, the republic's citizens have to learn to understand how their values are contradictory to their often xenophobic approach to refugees fleeing the Albesian Civil War.   The culture of the republic is often concerned with the welfare of the community. Most people wouldn't go out of their way to help someone in danger if it risks their own safety, but people generally believe that what's best for the most people is what's best for them. That being said, there's some tension in the country politically as it becomes clear that their incredibly wealthy nation seems unwilling or unable to lift people out of poverty.

Demography and Population

As of the 2460 census, the Emberleaf Republic has a population of 463 million.

Foreign Relations

The foreign policy of the republic centres around soft power. While they have a military, they don't often use it. Instead, they rely on alliances with neighbouring states for added military capability and often use their economic power to influence global politics. with the establishment of the North Continental Alliance, the Emberleaf Republic is becoming part of a military force that is capable of utilising its vast resources.

Motto: Truth and Equity

The Republic's capital is the city of Tarbach, (pop. 28.8 million) a massive supercity on either side of the Wedlenberg Strait, which empties into the Ornfathan Sea and bridges Eastern and Western Boesia. Other notable cities include:
  • Montos (pop. 19.1m)
  • Schoptendorf City (pop. 14.9m)
  • Hosbugheim (pop. 15.1m)
As well as hundreds of smaller towns, cities, and villages.

Currency
The Emberleaf Republic Currency is called the ERD, or the Emberleaf Republic Dollar, which is colloquially referred to as just a dollar, or if you live in another country, a Republic Note. while cash is still issued, most people's money is held in bank accounts.
Legislative Body
The Emberleaf Parliament is unicameral, and writes and passes laws. These laws are then signed or vetoed by the President. (Much like the USA, the legislature can override a veto with a 2/3 majority). The laws passed by parliament are considered supreme to the laws of the provinces, so if there's a contradiction, the federal laws supersede the province laws.
Judicial Body
There are three kinds of courts:
  1. Province Courts
  2. Federal Courts
  3. High Courts
These function similarly to how courts do in the US, wherein some cases are handled on the state level and some on the federal. The high court functions similarly to a supreme court, but its justices do not serve for life.
Executive Body
The Executive body is led by the President, who is elected directly (unlike most parliamentary systems). The executive "branch" is comprised of Ministries and their departments, as well as a number of federal agencies.

Finally! An equivalent of the US in modern science-fiction. I really like your flags, a mixure of medieval and modern flag, if you like vexillology, I also do a lot of flags in my world so don't hesitate to come and see!
