Grehearth

The City of Steam

"To those who seek their ambitions, often find themselves at the doorsteps of Grehearth's gates."
"Street's literally paved with gold. All's worth the struggle to get here... though you'll have to snatch it first; lest ya get trampled by others like yourself..."
-Unnamed Factory Mechanic

Culture

Duty, Diligence, and Desires.   Those are the three fundamental ideals that make a Grehearthian who they are. Those that aspire for greatness, that desire wealth, or perhaps, to fuel their own ambitions, will eventually find themselves acquainted beneath the towering walls of Grehearth. Underneath the smog-filled sky, lies various ethnicities and backgrounds, all of which seemingly contest and compete against one another for the chance to upheave oneself into a higher form of society. From the brightest minds, the strongest wills, or the skilled savants, all who desire to improve themselves will strive for the opportunity within these lands.

People of Grehearth

Lower Section Citizens

While the majority of these individuals are Lower Section Citizens, they live relatively ordinary lifestyles whose standards of life are the best in the world in terms of quality amongst the common class. Known as the working class, these Lower Section Citizens are the workforce that drives Grehearth's industrial prowess.

Central Section Citizen

Those who are of the Central Section Citizens, are those of high administrative ranks, linages of nobility heritage, and other important miscellaneous roles. Such examples are the Grail Knights, a legion of knighthood whose linage dates back prior to the age when the lands of Rubitia once stood. They presently play an active role in both administrative tasks, protectorate duties, and act as a figurehead for Grehearth's personal interests. Those who are in higher standings are known to actively control Grehearth are those such as the High Nobility.

Upper Section Citizens

Those who've shown proper qualifications find themselves in the upper echelons of society known as the Upper Section Citizens. Not all of these citizens stem from nobility, as many have proven themselves through education, craftsmanship, or other forms of skills. While not all may be of the same umbrella of their respective societies, they are instead mostly isolated in their own clique. As those of noble ranks may not hold themselves at the same standards as those of education, or of craftsmen/women.

Nobility and Kingship

They are individuals who have a direct lineage to the heroes who once fought against the Fomorians many years ago, or perhaps they may have obtained titles fitting of their family deeds to lead them to such levels of the aristocracy. Presently, the ones who are in complete control are of the Aliech Lineage. Grehearth at its core is a fundamentally Olligarchyal society that doesn't directly answer to a King or Queen. Rather, it is controlled by many in the higher echelons of society that respect the former landowners of the Aliech Kingdom, working in tandem with them for the future of Grehearth.

History

The landscape of Grehearth has changed drastically since the Battle of Mo'ra. Formerly known as the settlement of Rubita, the reconstruction of a once destroyed region.   Under the direct control of the The Aliech Kingdom and the Nobility of Grehearth, they've worked in unison together to lead the land to its current state.   Throughout the 200 years of its development since then, it has achieved tremendous success in its acquisition of land from the various settlements that have agreed in a unified contract to be under the Aliech Kingdom's name, and Grehearth's as well.   Much of the technological development has occurred since the development of the Experimental Steam Engine by the 7th Arcane Experimental Division. The advent of Steam Technology led towards various advantageous developments. Some examples that were made are, the Steam Engine, Transit System, Postal Service, Steamships, and more.   Recently, the production of Steam technology has slowly become widespread in Grehearth. Often used in trading or possible warfare, the Aliech Kingdom has commissioned the various Experimental Divisions that they employ to develop the latest in technology to outfit their weaponry and their vehicles.   While common adventurers and civilians do not have access to such vehicles or weapons, many aspire to obtain one for personal usage.

Wards

Separated into various wards of functionality, many of the regions have been zoned for appropriate regions and usages to accommodate all various forms of industry and lifestyles. Most of this zoning was accommodated for the sheer reason of what was deemed to be ethical by modern city planners; as previous and current designs seem to be inadequate for a large city as Grehearth. Additionally, as Grehearth continued to expand in size, the need for specific regions of industry and services seemed appropriate. Further construction on places of interest continues to this very day.   See the sidebar for further information on their separated districts.

Demographics of Population

Given its status as the "melting pot" of culture and people, the demographic is drastically vast but remains human-centric.

Government

As The Aliech Kingdom has dwindled in power since the Fell Star Incident, they have worked in tandem with the officials and nobilities within the region to establish a form of a simultaneous Monarchy and Oligarchy. While most administrative and general day-to-day rulings go without a hitch if any of the royalty were to enact their abilities as a Monarch to deny them as a form of a check. This action, however, has been rarely been enacted by the Monarchy.

Defenses

Many of the defenses of Grehearth lies within the abundance of eager and willing Adventurers within the Adventuring Ward. Consisting of individuals of varying talents and skills, Grehearth often compensates them generously in lieu of maintaining a massive self-defense force. While the necessity of a standing force is common in many cities and towns, a little worry is had due to the advent of industrial technology. Through the invention of Steam Rifles and various other technologies, the need for trained soldiers has dwindled over the years.   While in contrast, the Grail Knights are an ancient organization that dates back to the founding of the Aliech Kingdom. Loyal only to the Royalty of the Aliech Kingdom, their individual and united achievements are known to be among the well-told stories in all of Grehearth. From tales of valor, to romance, to dedication. Bards would sing praises about their skills, and often speak about their dedication to their work.
