Jugan Wall Building / Landmark in The Chronicles | World Anvil

Jugan Wall

Purpose / Function

The Wall was created as a defensive measure to defend the regions of the island of Castony from the dangers the lie within the Big Nothing.

Alterations

The wall was a rushed contruction project that only to a few weeks to complete. When more resources were avalible, it was used to better stablize it and reneforce areas that could esilty be breached. Along with functioning facilites to be add inside of it, such as barracks and armories. A few of things were add as well to improve defences such as cannons and turrets and that was pretty much it since then.

Architecture

The wall was origanlly made of scrape metal that was gathered from all over the islands's inhabited areas. So you find bits and pieces of different types if metals all through out the wall. It was never meant to be pretty, it was only meant to endure. It is mean’t to keep things out.

History

When Castony island was colonized by Gear Nation during the Dark Age, they quickly began to rapidly expand across the entire island in a matter of years, often draining the resources that could find in the barren wasteland that reminded them of home. Life would be harsh though due to the environment that was unforgiving to everyone lived on it with inhabitant zones being created to ensure that life was possible. It wouldn't be until the Steam Age that life started to be decent of the inhabitants living on it, with Harvester beginning created to extract water deep beneath the surface to begin the first terraforming operation since the world was torn asunder by the Cataclysm. The project now as "Rebirth" actual started out properly with greenery begin created across the inhabited zones, allowing for residents to actually live outside their artificial habitats. But all of that would change when harvesting began in the Big Nothing. It started with slight tremors, the earthquakes that shook the whole island.   Then the ground opened up and from the earth came the Kranok, an highly aggressive insect species that began killing anything that they saw. It was difficult to hold back their numbers as they swarmed the outlying settlements in a matter of day. As it was impossible actually hold them back for their rampage and every time an airship would open fire on them, they simply would burrow underground to wait out the barrage to end. A plan was created to ensure that the they would never reach to most inhabited side of the island, a wall was constructed with scrape metal all throughout the settlements as resources were scarce. It took only a few weeks to be completed and it would be named the Jugan Wall after the creator of the idea, Jugan Kest. Though it was often called by its unofficial name, the " Junk Wall" as it was only made of bits and pieces of anything they could find.It was strategically placed in the Gravo Canyons as the bedrock under the ground ensured that it would be in possible for them to dig under it. Along with the natural maze that made it near impossible to find a way out. The only main entrance to reach the other side of the island was where the wall was built. Meaning that they only way they to get thorough was through the wall.   When the first attack came, it was pure chaos as swarms of Kranok tried to go over the wall, Only four thousand defenders were able to be stationed on the wall against as thousands upon thousands tried to overrun them with sear numbers. It was said that the fighting lasted for days with only a few short moments of respite to be granted to the defenders. By they time the swarms had all but returned to their desert dwellings only seven hundred defenders were left from the fighting. They were honored as heroes and many began to enlist on the wall defend their homes. More resources were put into the defenses as more resources came in and volunteers from the other dominions came to add their brothers in arms. Many more waves would come throughout the centuries with the swarms getting bigger and more dangerous each time. For fourteen thousand years this would continue to happen, until finally as solution was created to defeat the Kranok once and for all. The creation of Kastin Gas made it easier to exterminate their hive with ease and in a matter of decades they were finally wiped out.   The wall had lost its purpose and it was importance was lowered to more pressing concerns. But its would remain functional as their were still many unknowns that many people feared lived out in the Big Nothing or at least underneath it. That would the case with a few case of giant creature coming from the ground and attacking the wall once in a while, with their bones left as a reminder of the dangers that still existed. There are also the threat of people that live out in Big Nothing, who are often the decedents of outcasts and criminals that were exiled to live out in the wastes as punishment for their crimes. Those who managed to survive created roving gangs marauders and their numbers have increased with their descendants who often try to breach the wall and escape their desert prison.   The threats are always real when you are up the wall as it is a matter of life and death. No matter how many defenders are still on the wall or what resources they have doesn't change that fact. Jugan Wall remains to defend the inhabitants that live on the island to from the unkown threats that do not exist yet but are still real. It only is only a matter of time before the next attack comes and its defenders are needed again. For the time being, it just another boring place to be stationed on.
