The Mask Maker Item in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

The Mask Maker

The Mask Maker is a strange artifact pulled to Tyrnog from the Other Side, and shares its name with one of their creator gods. While it generally takes the form of a Human-sized mask while unattuned, the face depicted varies based on the will of the artifact, and can change size to suit the face shown, or that of the wearer. Very little is known about it, other than that it was in Golarion recently, and was attuned to Mist after Esmerelda successfully joined the Knights of Mystic Fire.

Powers & Abilities

  • Faceless (Passive, Constant): The Mask Maker can only be worn or removed if the Face depicted is your own, and requires a standard action to put on or take off. Once worn, the Mask Maker melds into your flesh, which unlocks all other abilities in this document, assuming the correct Face is worn. Changing Faces is a swift action that requires at least one able hand to perform, as you reach into your hairline and pull the new features over the previous Face. You can only changes Faces once per round, even if another ability grants you a second Swift action. If the Face is not your own, transfer partial control of your character over to the GM. While you are in charge of your own actions, your voice and demeanor are controlled by the GM. If your actions would conflict with the ego of the Face you are wearing, the GM may call for a Will save as appropriate. Should you fail the Will save, the Mask Maker reverts to your original Face immediately, although you still suffer any negative effects from removing Faces. You immediately become aware of the Faces you've generated while wearing the Mask Maker, which are listed below.
    • Thunder in the Mist: Unlocks Sense of Self
    • Tommen: Unlocks Child of the Masquerade
    • Delikul: Unlocks Army of Bones
    • David Bastion: Unlocks Slayer of Scourge
    • Siren: Unlocks Vines of Perdition
    • Maelstrom: Unlocks The Screaming Chaos
    • Eshtayiv: Unlocks Pyric Reverie
    • Centurion: Unlocks Alpha and Omega
  • Sense of Self (Any Face, None, 1/Week): When you are wearing a Face created by the Mask Maker and either gain the Dead condition or reach 0 Sanity Points, the Mask Maker can be commanded to revert to your Face, and you immediately gain 1 RP, 1 HP, and 1 Sanity Point.
  • Child of the Masquerade (Tommen's Face, Passive, Constant): When wearing Tommen's Face, Tommen's Legacy also works against creatures with Mantles and other sources of deific power (but not Saint-level creatures). If using Tommen's aspect granted by Delikul's Whisper while wearing this Face, double the amount of Sanity damage taken, but add your character level to the level of spell resistance, and your immunity to Mind-Affecting effects while in that aspect cannot be overriden by anything short of a deity. This Face is only available to bearers of the Mantle of the Dark Walker.
  • Army of Bones (Delikul's Face, Passive, Constant): When wearing Delikul's Face, you may select up to six individuals as your "army", and share the base benefits of Delikul's Whisper with them for the duration. If using Delikul's aspect while wearing this Face, triple the amount of Sanity damage taken, but for each unholy trinity formed by your army, you gain an additional Resolve Point (separate from the one they themselves obtain). This Face is only available to bearers of the Mantle of the Dark Walker.
  • Slayer of Scourge (David's Face, Passive, Constant): Your Dark Walker Level is not high enough to use this ability. This Face is only available to bearers of the Mantle of the Dark Walker.
  • Vines of Perdition (Siren's Face, Passive, Constant): Your Dark Walker Level is not high enough to use this ability. This Face is only available to bearers of the Mantle of the Dark Walker.
  • The Screaming Chaos (Mist's Face, Passive, Constant): When under the effect of Thunder in the Mist, any enemy you defeat leaves a cloud of Debauchery where they fell, as their dying scream erupts with the red-pink mist. If you kill multiple enemies in a single round, multiple clouds of Debauchery are created. This does not count against the cloud of Debauchery you can create as part of the base ability. If you or your allies are standing in or adjacent a cloud of Debauchery while wearing this Face, you gain concealment against attacks that pass through that clouds line of effect. You and your allies see through clouds as if they were transparent. If you are wearing this Face when Thunder in the Mist ends, you gain a number of Temporary HP equal to your Dark Walker level for every cloud of Debauchery on the field (e.g. if DL = 3 and there are 5 clouds, you gain 15 Temporary HP). This Temporary HP disappears after a long or short rest. This Face is only available to bearers of the Mantle of the Dark Walker.
  • Pyric Reverie (Eshtayiv's Face, Passive, Constant): When wearing this Face, you are affected as per Death Affinity, and are immune to both fire and Pyric flame. In addition, your hands and weapons are augmented with Pyric fire, and deal an additional 1d6 fire damage per hit (this is not dismissable, and would count as an action against the will of the Eshtayiv). Should you deal the killing blow to a creature with Pyric flame, they return as a Pyric undead after 24 hours, and will follow your commands while you wear the mask. When you remove this Face, the Eshtayiv will attempt to grab hold of your mind and retain his ego — tearing him away deals 4d6 Sanity damage (DC 25 Will Save halves).
  • Alpha and Omega (Centurion's Face, Passive, Constant): When wearing the Face of the Centurion, you gain all Undead Immunities, and are treated as if your creature type were Undead. In addition, if an ability limits you from affecting Saint-level creatures, you may ignore it while wearing this Face, and harmful abilities that don't work against Saint-level creatures don't work on you. Last, you gain the ability to Skip using your own Mysticism modifier. While this Face is active you are tormented by the horrors that made the Centurion, and take 3d10 Sanity damage per round — which cannot be blocked by any ability (including those provided by deities).
