The Great Organ Item in The Canticles | World Anvil

The Great Organ

Said to have been used by the Voice to ascend all sleeping peoples, the organ is an intricate construct of pipes, keyboards and resonance amplifiers. It is now the property of the Canticles, a symbol of both their might and legitimacy as the Voice's successors.

Holy treasure

The High temple of Cadherra has been built around the organ, which prompted the claim of Cadherra as holy ground. The instrument is too massive to be moved, and remains on the rocky ground it was found on, untouched and unaltered. If access to the temple is restricted to only the high priests and the Cantors, even they are forbidden entrance in the organ's room. The Canticles alone have this privilege, and no one has ever disobeyed this order despite the temptation.

The organ has a cylindrical shape, of about 30 meters in diameter at its base. It possesses well over five hundred pipes of various sizes and materials. Some of them run in the structure of the temple and even emerge from its roof, giving the uncanny impression of dozens of little chimneys that never release any smoke. In the organ's room are as many keyboards as there are Canticles. When their holy duty commands it, they all gather here and play in unison, their mind and body united as one playing the divine melody.

When playing, their already incredible power is summed up and its range is increased tenfolds. Their Song can reach the entire galaxy to deliver the holy message. They typically use it during the galaxy-wide mess commemorating the day of Unison, when they make sure everyone partakes in the prayer by chanting directly to the mind of the people.

Weaponization

Many scholars have wondered over the years about the warring capabilities of the organ. While the sacred texts describe it as an artifact of infinite power, it has never been used to destroy anything bigger than an assault fleet or changed the mind of heretics, otherwise the conflict against the Eulogists and Hedonists would have been over. And so they ask, is it because the Canticles are benevolent and don't want to use a gift from the divine to do their worldly deed, or because of some untold limitation?
