Johanna, Queen of Anglia

There is a tension in being both monarch and woman.... The Witanagemot may seek to harry me into compliance, thinking to manipulate a weak-willed lady. I shall meet their intimidation with steel in all aspects of my reign.
— Queen Johanna, in a letter to her sister, 1779

Johanna took the throne of Anglia in 1779, when the women's rights movement was in full swing throughout western Europe. Her reign was filled with controversy from the moment the coronation was announced.   Suffragettes lauded her as a victory for women's liberation. Meanwhile, those who opposed the women's rights movement saw her claim to the throne as being purely political and suggested that, even though she was the only surviving child of the previous king, her eldest male cousin was the rightful king.   The 33-year-old Johanna took the throne in an atmosphere that treated her as a political pawn. She immediately sought to cultivate a reputation of iron. In meetings, she commanded any whom she saw as condescending her to leave the room "until they were prepared to speak with the Queen rather than 'a woman'" and refused to push legislation regarding rights for women in the first five years of her reign, despite urging from others, lest she further the perception that her reign was purely part of the women's liberation movement.   She is, in general, a popular queen. She has a reputation of being strong-willed and rational, with a deep dedication to the Catholic church and an aversion to wasting time and money on extravagant luxuries. One of her more controversial policies is her treatment of non-Catholic religions in Anglia. She has a policy of quiet tolerance, allowing other religions to be practised in private but not advocated in public. This is seen as both too lenient or too oppressive by various parties.
