End of Summer

In the short term, the Sundering of Ngavar intimidated those subjugated by the Lords of Summer, but it created a problem. Because Malorr had destoryed both himself and his immediate family, who were with him in his palace, the question of succession did not have an easy answer. A council of succession was called, and the various powers jockeying for internal power led to the son of Malorr's elder sister being made the Lord of Summer, a man called Halon.   This was not, however, met with unanimous consent. The other candidates maintained they had the rightful claim to the throne: Malor's younger sister, Zala; Malorr's youngest brother, Malak; and Malorr's nephew through his deceased, eldest younger brother, Amalak. These three would not make another bid for power, but their descendants would all contribute to the great succession crisis that would make for the end of the Nimean Empire, the great Folly of the Summerlords, the End of Summer.

While Malor IV was away fighting the Legacy, however, one of his rivals jumped. The son of his aunt Zala, a man called Zāren, declared himself the foremost of the Lavenārr, and the true Lord of Summer. Unfortunately for Zārren, the Legacy's own internal problems struck at the same time, allowing the reigning Lord of Summer to return south.   [...]   Unfortunately for the fourth Malorr and Zārren, while they were both away from the capital, the daughter of Malorr's cousin Malak, who was called Yelāv, had gone itno the palace and seized control of the Fang of the Lion. Control of the artifact drew many existing combatants, and some undeclared forces, to her side, in the belief that it marked her as the true successor to the Lands of Summer. Her forces were the fewest in number, but she compensated for this with her personal arcane might, bound as it was to the godly power of the Fang.   Her ascendancy, however, was not uncontested. There was preexisting enmity between her and the House of Flame, and they refused to acknowledge her claim. They were led then by Amalak, the same Amalak who was brother to Malorr III, who had been personally denied the succession by the council, and who had achieved enough arcane power to maintain his physical health, despite being almost one hundred years old. He proclaimed an end to the Lavenār system of government, and proclaimed a new form of governance where power rested in the hands of the Myuval, Nimea's arcane priests, with himself as the Myuvalār, its head.   Amalak demanded Yelāv surrender the Fang, and she refused. The ensuing battle destroyed the capital, the City of Nimea, as the power of the several hundred priests in the city contested the fallen god bound to the Fang of the Lion. In the end, all of Yelāv's followers were dead, as were most of the priests, but both Amalak and Yelav survived, and the latter still had the Fang.   [...]   Across the Nimean heartland, Amalak gathered ever more of the Myuval to his side, and with them a great many commoners. Malorr and Zārren had hosts comprised primarily of trained, professional soldiers, and between them controlled most of the empire's territory outside the heartland, which after the Sundering and the fall Dokhar incursions only truly included those territories north of the heartland and the Kogrunar Mountains. All the while, Yelāv traveled the heartland, gathering commoner support and striking at her enemies with the power of a god. However, she did not extend her personal might very far from her personage, though we do not know why. All the same, wherever she clashed with Amalak's forces, the land was left burnt and dried and cracked open by fire and heat and light.   It was into this environment that the Stormqueen emerged. Called Morgal, and hailing from the lands of the Dokhar, the Stormqueen emerged from the east, where she had recently helped the Borghani people free themselves from the shackles of the Godeaters' Legacy. She very quickly rallied the peoples subjugated by the Summerland Empire to her cause, and with them, her Borghani allies, and her immense arcane power, she crushed Malorr and Zāren's forces and personally killed them both.   Their armies fled south into the ravaged Nimean heartland. With the news of the rise of the Stormqueen, Yelāv and Amalak agreed to an alliance against this new foe. They marshaled their power, and prepared to unleash their magical power against the Stormqueen. But the Stormqueen sent rains and thunder ahead of her advance, severing the Myuval from the sun, and soaking them full of water, weakening them greatly. When the Sotrmqueen's forces fell upon them, the Nimeans were outnumbered, grossly demoralized, and almost entirely bereft of magical power; the mightiest of the Myuval, like Amalak, were unaffected, as were Yelāv and those in her immediate vicinity, for the fallen god bound to the Fang was of the sun, but the vast majority of the war-priests were powerless.   When battle was joined, the Nimeans held out longer than expected, but the ultimate end was the predictable one. The last of Nimea's armies fell. Amalak and the war-priests were overwhelmed. Yelāv was betrayed and killed by Amalak, who seized the Fang and became the Lord of Summer, but whether he would have kept to his word and replaced Lordship with Priesthood is unclear. Regardless, he would be the last. He battled the Stormqueen personally, unto his death, and the arcane overflow of their duel spread out over the land, drying up the River Nim, allowing for the final conversion of the Nimean heartland from a lush countryside into a desert.
