The Call

The Call is a powerful Greefolk ritual led by Callers, blending rhythmic stomps, claps, and chants to unify their people in moments of celebration, mourning, or defiance.

A Call begins with structure: synchronized stomps, sharp claps, and resonant chants establish a rhythm. The Caller leads these elements, their voice setting the tone with rehearsed verses that carry ancestral wisdom or communal truths. From this foundation, the Call becomes fluid and dynamic. Participants add their own movements and vocalizations, responding to the Caller’s guidance while expressing their emotions freely. Skilled Callers shift seamlessly between the structured and the improvised, weaving their presence into the performance to amplify its power.

The Call adapts to its purpose. In celebration, it crescendos into wild stomps and exultant cries, a storm of triumph and joy. In mourning, the Call slows, voices rumbling low before breaking into plaintive, heart-wrenching cries. Before battle, it becomes ferocious, unpredictable, and defiant, shaking the ground with its intensity.

Participants

A Caller is not an appointed role but a recognition earned through skill, presence, and the respect of the Greefolk. Each clan naturally identifies a handful of individuals as Callers—those who possess the commanding voice, instinctive rhythm, and emotional resonance needed to lead the Call. A Caller gains notoriety by consistently embodying the spirit of their people, whether by rallying warriors before a harrowing battle, uniting a fractured crew during hardship, or lending their voice to mournful ceremonies.

While there is no formal training, potential Callers often emerge early, standing out in communal gatherings or during moments of crisis. Their ability to channel the emotions of the group, weaving structure and improvisation into the Call’s powerful cadence, earns them recognition within their clan. As their reputation grows, Callers may lead during larger events or even inspire neighboring clans.
