Session 02 - The Dreaming Heralds Part 1

General Summary

Picking up from last session, the party continues down mine after killing the zombies. A voice speaking in orcish curses the adventurers in the name of its saint. A shaken M'Dok says the voice is the “demon.” AzKhan and Zyramus stealth down the tunnel to perform reconnaissance. The tunnel opens into a room with a small river passing through it, and a column of stone rising up out of the river. On top of the column is an orc. A battle ensures. The rest of the party rush to aid, but AzKhan and Zyramus fell the orc before they arrive.

The party searches and loots the orc body, finding an amulet with the symbol of St. Lorbumol on it. The party spends a significant amount of time discussing what the next course of action is. The party decides to leave the tunnel and spend the night in the miners’ shack outside. The next morning the party spends more time talking about what to do next. After much debate, they re-enter the mine and check the ledge where M’dok first appeared, where Zyramus and AzKhan discovered a secret door leading to a small room. They find some mundane objects along with two sacks of silver ore and a cloak. They meet up with the others in the cavern with the dead orc. Larya no longer detects magic in the water and the group decide to head back to Duvik's Pass . Varan chops off the orc’s hand as proof.

The party heads back to the town. They go to the mayor’s house and present the orc hand as evidence that the orc was infecting the water. They receive a letter of completion from the mayor, and head back to Wakefield Garrison .

The party spends a night camping on the way back, and are undisturbed during that time. By late afternoon, they reach Wakefield Garrison, and see an old man (Able Yarl ) pleading with a guard. The party approach and learn the man’s son has fallen into a state of unconsciousness. He begs Larya to come help his son at his farm. The party agrees and accompanies Able to his farm a few hours away. They arrive at the Yarl Farmstead on the outskirts of the Whispering Woods . They are shown Able’s son, Devik, in a sickly, unconscious state. Larya detects poison on Devik’s hand. AzKhan determines it is not a natural poison. Solianna questions Able’s young daughter, Abella, and learns that Devik said he found a ruined building deep in the woods. The party decides to check it out and gets direction from Abella.

AzKhan leaves his bags of silver ore with Abel and the party heads into the Whispering Woods. AzKhan leads the way, and is able to find the trail that young Devik left. They follow that, but stop when they see a brown bear up ahead in the woods. However, the bear doesn’t notice them, and move along. After another hour’s walk, the party notices a clearing up ahead, and a stone wall with a gate. Larya suspects poison traps and urges all to be cautious. They pass through the gates and come upon a fountain and a three-story building. The building looks abandoned, with the doors and windows sealed up.

The party approaches and see a holy symbol of a sun and moon on the front door, and a message carved into the stone front door saying “Danger. Entry forbidden. All hail the New Morning!” On the ground they find a needle with a substance on it. Larya opens the door via a thaumaturgy cantrip, and the party enters the building. They head up the stairs to the 2nd floor. They notice at the top of the stairs is a white cloaked figure.

The party tries to communicate with the figure, but it does not respond and only stares blankly at them. Varan approaches the figure, but the figure turns and walks away, entering a door on the 2nd floor. The party approaches that door and hears sounds on the inside. The door opens and they notice there are now several figures in white. Most of the party attacks the cloaked figures. Larya, believing the cloaked figures are attacking in defense, does not attack and tries to broker a peaceful resolution. During the first, the party discovers that every time one of the white robed figure falls, it quickly rises back up. They notice all the figures throats look to have been cut long ago, and deduce that these beings are undead.

After cutting off all the heads off the robed beings, the beings finally stay down. The party continues exploring and find a room where another robed figure on a bed. He is an old man and appears in deep slumber. The party tries to wake him but to no avail.

The party moves on, continuing to explore. They break down a locked door and find a locked chest. After narrowly avoiding a needle trap on the chest, they pick open the chest. They find a copper, silver, and gold pieces, a small pouch of dust (of disappearance), a rod (immovable rod), and a key.

Behind the Screen

Because of AzKhan’s high Survival check in the woods, he was able to find the path that Devik took, which was a shorter path to the temple. Had they taken Abella’s directions by following the stream, it would’ve taken an additional hour to reach the temple.
