Session 01 - The Burning Plague
General Summary
The adventure began with a gathering of peasants at Wakefield Garrison to hear an official pronouncement. In effort to reduce local crime and wrong-doings, a decree by the duke (misspoken in session as "baron") declared that an able-bodied member of each family or household must report to partake in a "Task of Justice" assigned to them. The peasant there were then formed into groups.
Grouped together were AzKhan Thrallfjord, Ikari, Larya Grayaxe, Solianna Loranan, Varan Boggs, and Zyramus Quantim. The party then met Quintinius Ulnan, who gave them the task to investigate a supposed unnatural sickness infecting the nearby town of Duvik's Pass. Before leaving the party bought some healing potions from the soldiers' supplies house. They then started their journey towards Duvik's Pass. Their travel that day went by uninterrupted. That evening, the party went hunting and managed to get a large deer, which they cooked and ate.
The party picked up traveling the next morning and passed through Peridot Pines . By evening, the party arrived at Duvik's Pass, located at the base of the Bronze Mountains and on the shore of Duvik's Basin (a large lake). The party talked with the mayor and learned that the disease—being referred to as the Burning Plague —had started 3-4 weeks ago. The disease is deadly and the bodies of the dead were being burned. The party decided to start first by investigating the lake water and the lake's water source. The party learned the lake is fed from waters coming off the Bronze Mountains and also learned there is a mine up in the mountains.
The party continued investigating the lake. Larya and AzKhan took a boat out onto the lake. While on the water, Larya's detect magic spell determined the lake water has an aura of magic. Larya and AzKhan also learned, via Larya's magic spell, that they have contracted the Burning Plague while out on the lake.
Larya and AzKhan returned to shore, and Larya went and talked with town priest about the Burning Plague. Larya learned that people usually only last 3-10 days before expiring. The party rested for the remainder of day. They slept the night, and the next morning they began trekking up the mountain.
The party arrived at the mouth of the mine and inspected a miners' hut nearby. Finding nothing of interest, they entered the mines. Down the entrance tunnel, they found an overturned mine cart with the dead body of a miner underneath it. Larya investigated the body, setting off a thunderstone trap that temporarily deafend Solianna.
The party continued exploring and found a mess hall with freshly eaten meals of raw meat. AzKhan and Zyramus checked the mess hall's storage closet and got shot by arrows fired by hiding kobolds. The party barricaded storage closet door, and proceeded to set the door on fire. They then retreated, leaving the mess hall and blocking the door to mess hall with the mine cart.
The party headed in other direction and entered a large cavern filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The party heard an angry voice from above that ordered them to "Get out!" A fight with kobolds ensured. After a few kobolds are killed, the kobold cleric, M'Dok, asked for a truce. M'dok claimed his people weren't responsible for the diseases, and claimed a "demon" further down the mines was. M’dok proposed letting his people leave the mine peacefully. The party agreed and let the remaining kobolds leave, but the party convinced M'dok to join them to fight the "demon."
The party continued and found a small room full of dead miners. Four of the dead miners rose as zombies that attacked the party. During the fight, Varan contracted the Burning Plague from a dead miner. The party eventually defeated zombies, and the session ended.
