Sparked Species in The Bennorian Chronicles | World Anvil

Sparked

The Sparked are arcane automatons that were created by the Arcane Tinkerers in the University of Magic. These automatons were designed to handle complex tasks which required advanced decision making skills. The first generation consisted of five creations that were all activated at the same time using a major arcane ritual that took every Tinkerer in the University to cast.  Within minutes the exhausted mages realized the automatons were far more than they intended. Instead of the task dedicated thinking machines they sought, a new born sentient race started to walk and talk before them. Some of the mages resisted this like of thinking and simply refused to admit that these machines were more than that. The head of the University finally sought consultation from the Clerics of the Temple of the Divines. Four Elder clerics of the Divines came to study the new automatons. After much discussion the Dedicate of Spring spoke. She told the mages that Divine Spring had chosen to bless their efforts and gave the spark of a soul in each automaton. With these words they became known as The Sparked.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

From the first five all other Sparked have descended, for indeed they have the ability to reproduce, albeit in a very different way. When two Sparked wish to create offspring, they join efforts to build the housing, each often adding a piece of their own body. Once construction is complete, the two Sparked join in a secretive ritual where they infuse the lifeless automaton with magic and a portion of their own soul. Once the ritual is complete a new Sparked is born.
All attempts by subsequent Arcane Tinkerers and mages have failed to reproduce the creation of the Sparked and usually end up with severe magical backlash against any participants in the ritual. Due to the dangers involved, the Univeristy of Mages has banned any further attempts.
