Wellgar Brinehanded Character in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Wellgar Brinehanded

Priest of Procan

The congregation at the Temple of Procan in Saltmarsh is lead by this slightly eccentric former whaler, and are well-attended.
Wellgar has a sharp memory and an insightful nature, despite his advancing years. He can remember every storm, lost ship and enormous catch ever brough into Saltmarsh harbour.
When not leading prayers and tending to the needs of the inhabitants of the town, Wellgar can often be found sitting at the docks, holding forth with many fanciful tales of shipwrecks, lucky escapes, and famous captains.
Matters ashore rarely interest him, but the temple and its bell tower are also served by a half-dozen novitiates and laypeople who keep things running smoothly.

Appearance and Mannerisms

Of medium height, with long matted hair and a beard knotted with shells, Wellgar is an unlikely figure to be found at the pulpit. He wears plain robes and always goes barefoot. There is a sparkling glint of mischief in the old man's eyes.
He always carries a large conch horn and a curved staff, and has deep pockets seemingly full of sweet candies that he hands out to children.

Notable Achievements

Wellgar has used the blessings of Procan to seek out lost vessels several times in the past, and is credited with the rescue of several ships lost in storms, or wrecked in Salting Bay.
It is said that back in his whaling days, Wellgar almost lost his right leg in battle with a young kraken. A priest of Procan found the shipwrecked young man and using the powers of the Storm Lord, was able to restore Wellgar's leg. It was then that he gave up the life of a whaler to serve a greater good.

A slightly eccentric ex-sailor who now serves as chief priest in the Church of Procan in Saltmarsh.
