Vodun in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Vodun

On the Isle of Ghosts, Tamquet, in the Hold of the Sea Princes the Vodun practice their strange rites.   Vodun are greatly feared by most, for this strange type of Warlock has bound themselves to the spirits of restless ghosts that haunt the forests of the island, and are said to use blood to power their curses.   As a Vodun your patron is a spirit, an entity previously alive on the material plane of existence but which has now transcended to where the dead people rest. This entity, often referred to as a Ghost or Baron, has granted you powers many would consider unorthodox.   Dark arts and blood magic are often associated with you. This association is strengthened through the use of Vodun Totems, which act as a Spellcasting Focus for your Vodun Curses. The smell of heated metal is often associated with the unleashing of a Vodun Curse.   Vodun magic often uses superstition and bloodied relics to power. Examples used for colour and roleplay might include the use of the rotting head cut from a two-headed dog that can see past illusion (True Seeing), a blackened tongue cut from a hanged man that can translate foreign languages (Tongues), or a dead child's eyeball used to see the future (Foresight).   Although some may think Vodun only do harm, this is actually not true. They are often healers in small tribes or parties of adventurers, their patron offering protection to those who will pay the price. Vodun are also more often than not good with medicine and removing curses

Vodun around the Azure Sea

Almost exclusively from, or having passed through Tamquet, Vodun are normally human, and often pallid of skin and pale, haunted eyes. Their gums are white rather than pink, a side-effect of their use of blood to fuel their magic.   They are also known as deck-wizards, witch-haunted, and boccor, and are often employed by pirate captains to bring protection to their ships and crews.

Vodun Abilities

Vodun can use their Vodun Totem to cast curses.
Name Vodun Points Description
Decapitation 18 You rip the head off your totem as an action, forcing the Vodun Cursed target to make a wisdom saving throw. If the target fails, the target takes 10d10 Force damage and becomes Stunned for a minute. It takes half as much damage on a successful save and doesn't become stunned. The totem is then ruined and has to be restored during a short rest.
Kiss 2 You kiss your totem as a bonus action, forcing the Vodun Cursed target to make a Wisdom saving throw equal to your spell save DC. If the target fails it becomes charmed until the end of your next turn.
Life Rip 4 Life Rip. You can spend 4 Vodun Points and 1HP to draw with your blood on the totem as an action, dealing 2d12 necrotic damage to the Vodun Cursed target and healing you the amount of damage dealt.
Needle Piercing 2 You pierce your totem with a needle as a bonus action. To do this you have to have both hands free. The Vodun Cursed target then takes 2d6 Force damage. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 10th level and 5d6 at 14th level.
Nightmares 2 You hold your fingers over your totem's eyes as a bonus action, forcing the Vodun Cursed target to make a Wisdom Saving Throw with a DC equal to your Spell save DC. If the Vodun Cursed target fails it becomes frightened until the end of your next turn.
Psychological Darkness 2 You spread darkness over your totem as an action, forcing the Vodun Cursed target to make a Wisdom Saving throw equal to your Spell Save DC. If the Voodoo Cursed target fails it gets the blinded condition until the end of your next turn.
Strangle 1 You strangle your totem with your fingers as a bonus action, forcing the Vodun Cursed target to make a wisdom saving throw with a DC equal to your Spell Save DC. If the creatures fails it starts suffocating (see Player's Handbook page 183.) until it succeeds the saving throw or you use another Vodun Ability.
Vulnerable 5 You hold your totem's limbs with your hands. As an action, you choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you, cursing it until the end of your next turn. The next time you or an ally of yours hits, the target has vulnerability to all of that attack's damage, and then the curse ends.
