BREAKING: ADVOCACY GROUP EXPOSED!
"People for All Uplifted Peoples Anywhere were exposed yesterday for committing a string of theft and abductions on uplifted orangutan attaches in Sri Lanka. Journalist Charles d'Camambert was embedded with the Excelsior Company of the 8th Battalion, 2nd Division of the SCSF recounted the scene: 'They breached the defenses of the compound at 0430 local time, and made entry. The outer perimeter was guarded by turrets, but the inner grounds were guarded by a troupe of trogs. PUPU had apparently reconditioned them to act as their own secuirty force. Inside the compound were two Rajahs and the terrorists themselves, who lasted about eight seconds against the concentrated fire of the clones. Inside, we found a facility that looked like a charnel house; the corvoids, ook mooks, and such had apparently been tortured for information and then sold as meat for the local wet markets. PUPU has been revealed as a fraud but that's not the most shocking revelation; the head of PUPU has been identified as a tankbrain! The uplifted octopus was giving the orders and had apparently come up with this entire 'activist' scam. Once it was disposed of, its accounts were drained and the PSC investigators recovered two billion chits. It's unknown at this time how the tankbrain got away with this scheme for so long. Not too long after humanity's first colonies, they successfully began uplifting other species to full sapience. Their initial success was primarily with primates and canines, but they managed to expand to several different species. While nearly every sort of creature has been uplifted at one point or another, the procedure stabilized around a few particularly useful types. Ook Mooks are uplifted orangutans who have been particularly useful filling roles as personal assistants, secretaries, attaches, and manual laborers. Corvoids are uplifted crow-chimeras that typically find service in military and exploratory capacities, though an enclave of 'wild Corvoids' have established themselves as a fully functional community in the Centauri System. Some Corvoids serve as couriers, and are perhaps understandably adept as small-frame starship pilots. Trogs are uplifted chimpanzees who were developed as an alternative to clones, with limited success. They are lousy shots, but with Smart Guns or enough laser pistols, they can be serviceable security force. They really shine with melee weapons: what they lack in technique they more than make up for in savagery and raw power. Tankbrains are uplifted cephalopods. Unlike most uplifts, they're physically identical to their forebears, and breed true. They function as living computers with a certain creativity and cunning that is lacking with bioroids or AI. Mass Produced vs. Made to Order The four mentioned above are the most common uplifts and the only four to breed true, allowing them to be mass produced and integrate into human society without human maintenance. Other varieties exist, but these are Made to Order and much more rare. You aren't likely to come across a Rajah in a starship market buying sandwiches or a Canoid family moving in next door. Uplifts can be citizens in human space, with a few restrictions. They cannot vote, must be monitored for deviance by medical professionals, cannot hold public office or military rank, and cannot hold secret clearance. Instead, embassies for each of the four major species of uplifts are established to lobby the PSC on their behalf. Humans don't tend to see their uplifts as equals.
