Schonau

The ancestral home of Diederick Stein though it’s long fallen into disuse. Once upon a time, the Stein’s were a lesser noble with little but this castle to their name. After a marriage joined them with the nobles of Haffelerschiffe, they were able to gain notoriety and so abandoned Schonau in favour of the richer economy of Haffelershiffe.

Architecture

Built atop an outcropping of rock and reinforced with thick walls. The building is crude and simple but imposing, set with harsh angles and built from blackened brick. The castle has been deemed impregnable.

History

The ancestral home of the Steins. At the dawning of the Age of A Hundred Kings, Balderick Stein, Diederick Stein’s grandfather took the mountaintop castle as his home, believing it to be the most militarily defensible castle. He soon realized the lapse in his judgement when he discovered that trade caravans were also wary of the arduous trek up the mountain. Thus, the castle was promptly abandoned in favour of Haffelerschiffe.   When Diederick Stein came to power, he returned to Schonau with his family, favouring it’s defensibility for protecting his family. After his wife’s death though, he has not returned. Some even say that it’s become haunted by the dead queen’s spirit.
