Dragons

Dragons are an ancient extinct species that used to roam Ugnemia millennia ago. During the First Era, they were the most dominating species on the planet until the Elves drove them to extinction with their newfound powers, paving the way to civilization how we know it today.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragons are large quadrupedal lizard-like species that have thick scales covering their entire back from head to tail. Some species also have a band of spikes running across their spine. At the back of their tail is a large club or stinger which they use to defend their rear. According to ancient folklore, these scales are impenetrable by any conventional weapon and their tails were said to be able to punch through anything. Their only weakness is their belly, right where their vital organs are. A well-placed javelin could kill a dragon in one shot.

Biological Traits

A dragon can be categorized in several subspecies, those being:
  • Fire Dragon
  • Ice Dragon
  • Water Dragon
  • Venom Dragon
  • Lightning Dragon
  • Steam Dragon
In the modern world, there also exist two species that are directly related to Dragons, which are Wyverns and Wyrms.

Genetics and Reproduction

Dragons are cold-blooded reptilian species, meaning they require external sources to warm themselves up.  Since they are reptilian, they reproduce by laying eggs. Female dragons tend to defend these eggs with their lives while male dragons tend to watch over treasures and other valuables.

Growth Rate & Stages

The lifespan of a healthy dragon is about 600 years, not counting its incubation stage. A dragon egg takes about 80 years to hatch a dragon cub, which takes roughly 20 years to mature. During these years, the dragon develops its ability to breathe elemental energies depending on its subspecies. When a dragon passes the age of 500, its abilities start to slowly deteriorate until it eventually dies of old age.

Ecology and Habitats

Dragons typically inhabit mountains or caves, guarding treasures or their eggs. A dragon thrives in a cold and moist environment, where it can remain undiscovered by anyone for centuries.

Dietary Needs and Habits

A dragon is carnivorous, feeding mostly on anything living it comes across, including intelligent species such as Elves. Feeding also fuels the Dragon's ability to use its elemental energies such as breathing fire.

Biological Cycle

There appears to be no known correlation with dragon behavior and the passing of the seasons.  During winters, however, dragons tend to hibernate but will wake at the slightest sign of danger.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Dragons tend to roam the world on their own, only seeking each other out during their mating season.

Domestication

Due to their territorial nature, Dragons tend to be the most difficult creatures to domesticate, and any attempt to do so will likely result in a fatality.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

When a Dragon dies, its fossilised remains will eventually turn into the valuable Valvium.

Facial characteristics

A Dragon has a reptilian face, comparable to lizards. They have a long snout with horns above the nostrils and steam coming out of their nose. Dragons have dark yellow eyes with black oval pupils.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The majority of Dragons inhabit mountain ranges, therefor the most Dragon fossils are found at Cliffedges and Norheimsk.

Average Intelligence

Dragons are very territorial and are driven by their will do protect what is theirs. While doing this, they prefer to use brute force over outsmarting their opponents.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragons don't have a conventional sense of sight. Their eyes are only able to detect infrared waves and use this combined with their incredible sense of smell to detect their prey from miles away. Dragons are also capable of hearing, but this is obsolete when detecting their prey.
