Skärl's Hjorn
Over one thousand years old, Skärl's Hjorn is a reformed boarding house-turned-tavern, where patrons seek respite from the biting cold landscape of the unrelenting cold.
"Gather 'round the fire, and let us warm your bellies and your spirits with a hearty menu fit for those who dare to tread the frozen tundras and icy ruins of the far north."
~ Beylorn Oakswin, original architect of Skärl's HjornPurpose / Function
Originally a boarding house, Skärl's Hjorn is now a tavern, and a cherished eatery (and watering hole) for the residents of Wrothmïr.
Architecture
The building is simplistic in stature, with a wooden construction double-reinforced on main support and load bearing supports. Showcasing a painted and heavily re-inforced front door, the walls of the building are insulated with a magically charmed material made of cloth fibers, animal wool, and other binding insulators. The showcase of the building is the massive horned skeleton mounted above the front door, a relic retrieved from the nearby Higgüffstllgr. Braziers and hanging lanterns are lit nearly year-round out front of the establishment, ushering passersby inside.
History
Skärl's Hjorn was originally constructed almost two-thousand years as a refuge for weary and wounded travelers seeking shelter from the cold. Clerics of Mirimae used the shelter as a great hall for many years before (and during) construction of the church that still stands today. Over time, the hall was used less and less for triage services of the sick and travel-weary, and made a natural transition to hosting travelers that were hungry and needed a place to lay their head.
When local expeditioneers first discovered Higgüffstllgr, they were fascinated by what manner of creature had died and decomposed in the snow. They could not fathom a beast of that size and stature, "a beast the size of a small mountain", a historian was quoted as saying. To pay homage to the fallen creature, two large horns from the remains were secured and lugged back to Wrothmïr. They were studied for a time before being hoisted and secured above the door to the tavern.
