Atlantean Ranger Corps

The Atlantean Ranger Corps are a group of Government sponsored Rangers who patrol the Reaches for the crown. They are semi-autonomous and move about in the wilds at will. They are known for their use of Black Arrows, some of which are said to be Arrows of Slaying.

Composition

Manpower

The Atlantean Ranger Corps number only 700 skilled Rangers ranging in level from Level 3 to level 20. The pre-requisite for joining is to have achieved 3rd Level as a Ranger. It does not mean that the person needs to have remained a Ranger, so there are many Failed Rangers (Stricken Ranger (Strangers)) - Warriors in their ranks also.

Equipment

The Rangers of the Corps are given Composite Bows of Obsidian and Ebony construction. Their weaponry is also tipped with Obsidian Alloy - a unique alloy said to be derived from some form of Obsidian Glass.   Other than their weaponry the Rangers of the Corps use any other type of armor or clothing. Their internal rankings are not made public but it is thought to be very informal.

Weaponry

The Obsidian nature of the weaponry gives the weapons an extra +1 in damage. This is for all weaponry on top of the natural magic of any given weapon being wielded. Therefore a +1 sword, once treated by the Ranger Corps will have a +2 damage bonus.

Vehicles

The Rangers use steeds, normally Tarpans and Koniks - very different from other units in Atlantis that rely upon Atlantid Disks to move around. The Rangers are known to travel the entire length and breadth of the Continent.

Structure

The Grandmaster of the Corps is considered the leader of the group, and every ten Rangers fall under the 'Guidance' of a Ranger-Lord of 10th level. However, the individual rangers have their own purview in terms of what and where they go. Only in times of emergency are they summoned together. It is said that they must report their observations on a regular basis to their Ranger-Lord Watcher.

Tactics

The group use hit and run tactics - focusing on using their wilderness skills to keep opponents guessing. Each ranger is said to be a bit of a specialist, with some specialising in desert terrain and others in Arctic conditions.

Training

Training is paid for by the crown, and all progress is greatly rewarded. Even those who are no longer formal rangers enjoy the same rankings and privileges as those who still hold Ranger status.
