Atlantean Calendar

Overview

The Atlantean Calendar is both a necessity and a masterpiece of Inter-species development. Combining Elvish Elements, Human Mathematics and Dwarven Exactness, it is a universal calendar for all three species to use.

Background

In keeping with the teachings of Plato, the calendar was connected to the "twelve gods" with each of the twelve months matching their number, and Hades /Pluto being considered one of the twelve in proposing that the final month be devoted to him and the spirits of the dead (Plato, The Laws 828 b-d). However, with the formation of a thirteenth month in this calendar, other divinities can be attributed to the last month, including unknown Gods, and the month of the harvest/dead dedicated to Hades.

Starting with the Titanomarchy War, time faltered. Chronos was defeated by Zeus, and with it came a faltering in the heartbeat that would change everything.

With the fracturing of time occurring as Chronos struggled to re-synchonise his heartbeat. The resulting erratic nature of time was in need of organising. Through combinations of engineering (Dwarven), arcane/eldritch (Elvish) and divine intervention (Human) crafts - a new, more precise calendar was created for the planet. It was through the work of Hephaestus that the World cycle was re-timed to a mechanical-magical chronometer. The results remain close enough to the previous one, so as to be largely indistinguishable, but different enough to be more reliable. The Elves ensured that longer term cycles were included in the system, whilst the humans ensured that the number of days remained uniform throughout each month, and the Dwarves provided for the medium lengths of time measurement and sheer accuracy.

In summary the new calendar is as regular as clockwork.

Days

Each day is 28 hours long. There are 364 of these in every year.
Generating this randomly:
3D10 - 2, generating 1 to 28 for the day of the month.

4D4 - 3, generating 1 to 13 for the month of the year. (Note: Brazen and Elven Characters have different month generating methods - with Elven only using 1D12, and Brazen only being born during Month 5: Dememon).

Weeks

Each week is 7 days long. Every number falls on exactly the same day of the week. So that every Yell(ow)day is always the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd of every month. There are 52 of these in every year, which matches the number of years in a Grand Cycle.

This has resulted in several traditions developing, such as pay day being every Yell Day (Yellow and Gold Matched up), and the 'Weekend' is designated by Royal Decree so the Vi (olet) day is celebrated as a holiday for the end of the week's work given by the King.

Rainbow Symbolism Resulting from Names

The Rainbow in the sky is seen as a promise that the seven days will remain unchanged, some consider a rainbow to be the reflection of light off of the Chronometer of the World showing a sign that it is being worked upon by Hephaestus or one of his minions.

See you at the end of the Rainbow - is another way of fondly saying farewell to any one you will not see for the whole week, whilst a wish to 'End your Bow' is seen as a death wish being placed on someone.

Some days have been shortened, such as Yellow Day, Orange Day and Indigo Day to make them quicker to use in conversation.

Months

Each month is 28 days long. and there are 13 of these in every year.

2 Poseimon Month of Poseidon
3 Arimon Month of Ares - War Month
4 Aphromon Month of Aphrodite - Peace Month
5 Dememon Month of Demeter - New Growth
6 Hermemon Month of Hermes the Messenger
7 Hermon Month of Hera (Marriage)
8 Apollmon Month of Apollo - Sun and Music
9 Artemon Month of Artemis - Moon and the Hunt
10 Hademon Month of Hades - Death (some say Undeath)
11 Hephaemon Month of Hephaestus - Rebuilding and Craft
12 Athemon Month of Athena - Warcraft and Wisdom
13 Persemon Month of Persephone Destruction and Rebirth

It should be noted that not all agree with parts of this calendar.

The last month is considered by some to be the month of Persephone because she is absent and it is winter.

Others think of it as the month of Chronos because he was Perse (Destroyer/Destroyed) and the metal Lead is his metal for that month.

Yet others say it is another Perse (Destroyer) yet to come.
The sixth month Hermemon, is celebrated by Rogues as he is also the god of thieves.

They also claim that he 'stole' the sixth month from Hera (Juno).

Years & Grand Cycle

Every year is allocated a metal and element combination title. It takes 52 years for that cycle (Called a Grand Cycle) to repeat itself. Each of the metals is said to match the corresponding God of one of the Months - this is said to give rise to increases and decreases in power of Priests and some Wizard Spells through the cycle.
