Antikythera Navigation Mechanism

Overview

The Antikythera (Ἀντικύθηρα) Mechanism is designed to calculate astronomical positions and direction of travel.

The area is known as Aigilia (Αἰγιλία), or Ogylos (Ὤγυλος) in the local dialect. However Chronic Anachronisms have shown that it will be known as Antikythera.

  The device, is normally housed in a 34 cm × 18 cm × 9 cm (13.4 in × 7.1 in × 3.5 in) wooden box.

Composition

It is known that the current device has 37 meshing bronze gears and 2 fragile crystal gears enabling it to follow the movements of the Moon and the Sun through the zodiac, to predict eclipses and to model the orbit of the Moon. it also calculated the positions of the five classical planets.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The device is a geared clockwork analog computer that calculates several Astrological and Geological Phenomenon. There are a total of 30 main gears and 9 secondary (minor and more fragile crystal gears). The device allows for the calculation of:
A The current days, months, and year based on entering the position of stars into the device.
B The calculation of the eclipses of the Moon and Sun.
C The alignment of the 5 planets.
D The cycle for the Ampheres Arc (allows safe passage through the field).
E The calculation of the tides
F The calculation of the time of Dawn and Sunset

Manufacturing process

Each device must be hand-made. The plans for the device are included in the On Sphere Making text of Archimedes stored in the Atlantean Royal Library.
The use of a jeweler is recommended for the crafting and inscribing of the gears.
