Edriessa Settlement in Terra Rynn | World Anvil

Edriessa

Edriessa is the capital city of the Selene territory, and the seat of the Church of the Inheritor. Founded over 700 years ago, Edriessa has grown from a small encampment of refugees to a strong independent city, bustling with commerce and culture. Settled along the Annaelles river along the northern rim of the Turathi lowlands, Edriessa serves a diverse population of Selendrie followers, political refugees, and wayward Chosen in search of purpose.

Districts & Locations

Despite its size, Edriessa is one of the fasting growing cities in the lowlands. Build around the Cathedral Ward, the remaining five wards of the city fan out in roughly equidistant directions. While the Church and administrators often use a light touch to administrative the basic construction and maintenance of the city's inhabitants, some care has been taken to maintain a roughly uniform shape of the city as it expands. this has inadvertently lead to some areas, such as the Glimmer Ward, to become far more crowded than others, less the inhabitants disrupt the overall pattern of the cities shape.   Edriessa is build along a bed of solid soil just north of the Annaellas River. The heart of the city is the Aurora de Basillica, as well as the surrounding Campus Ward. The basilica is a marvel of architectural genius, standing over 200 feet tall at its peak, and hosting several large arched displays filled with stained glass. This is where the Church of the Inheritor operates all manner of operations to oversee the preservation of Selene, as well as spread its religious influence.   The remainder of the city is composed of a mixture of stone and wooden buildings varying wildly in size and function. Edriessa's lack of central planning is often noted in the haphazard placement of various services and buildings, leading many to sometimes refer to the city as "The Holy Labyrinth". Nonetheless, the city has managed to provide the minimum services necessary to function, and many structures often possess a unique artistic flair.

Governance

Edriessa is often synonymous with the Church of the Inheritor, and much of the cities operations are under their direct control, if not influence. In order to facilitate proper administration, the city is divided into several wards, each delegated to one or more High Priests. In turn, daily functions are handled by local councils and volunteers in service to the church. Unlike many other Turathi cities, official administration is primarily an 'hands-off' approach, and instead leave the wards and denizens to handle much on their own. While this approach is welcomed as a breath of relative freedom, the capital is prone to frequent bouts of anarchy and restlessness before the Church restores order.   The Curia, which compose the primary government of the Church, rely mostly on an informal system of patronage and social credit to exert control. Fearful of enacting more dictatorial statues upon their people, this system has the drawback of leaving much of the populace at the whims of the priesthood who enact their judgements is often synonymous with the Church of the Inheritor, and much of the cities operations are under their direct control, if not influence.   In order to facilitate proper administration, the city is divided into several wards, each delegated to one or more High Priests. History

Founded late into the Empire's history, early founders had the foresight to construct important foundational infrastructure, such as deep wells, sewers, and roads. However, in the last few decades, this per-emptive planning has begun to reach its limit, and the city struggles to accommodate its growing population with the necessary services without severe public investment and administration.
