Rockgate
Rockgate is a town in the Kingdom of Avalon located at the feet of the Avalon-Liberty Range. It is one of the towns that mark the end of the "civilized" and controlled lands of the Kingdom and the beginning of wild and untamed lands of the mountain range. Many people coming to and from the mountains pass through Rockgate every day. Merchants with carts filled with trade goods and adventurers seeking wealth and glory and a common sight here.
Defences
The town is surrounded by a wooden wall with a filling of crushed rocks, sand and bricks. It isn't the best defensive construction in the world but is enough to repel any bandit attacks that may come from the mountains.
The town's garrison is mostly a volunteer force made up of the town's inhabitants. There are about 100 guards who are on duty all the time. In an event of an attack, Rockgate is able to muster about a thousand more soldiers.
We can defend ourselves from bandits, but our one hundred semi-professional soldiers and a thousand volunteers would have no chance against a regular army. I pray for peace every night.
Industry & Trade
The town of Rockgate doesn't produce a lot of products and the majority of what is produced is used locally. Most of the town's inhabitants live from trade or from offering accommodation and food to merchants and other travellers. There are about 50 inns and taverns in the whole town. They range from luxurious ones like the "Golden Eagle" to poor ones like the "Rocky Bed".
Architecture
The majority of the town is built from wood, stone and bricks in a very simple and functional style. Even the representative buildings of the town's government and guard don't have many decorations.
A house has a purpose. It needs to keep people safe and warm. There's no need for any fancy additions.
The more luxurious taverns and inns, like the "Golden Eagle", are the exceptions from the simplicty of architecture. Their owners made sure that the buildings clearly tell people that these are establishments for the wealthy.
