First Knight of Avalon
Over the years the real power in the Kingdom of Avalon has shifted from the King to the First Knight of Avalon, leader of the Round Table. Today, the King is mostly a ceremonial figurehead.

Historically, the First Knight was chosen by the King for a five-year term from the members of the Round Table. As the balance of power was shifting towards the Round Table the election process also changed. Today, the knights of the Round Table choose the First Knight from among themselves. The King only confirms the choice. There is no law that would stop the King from refusing a candidate, but the tradition says that he shouldn't do that.
Responsibilities
The First Knight leads and moderates the sessions of the Round Table. They also oversee how the Round Table's decrees are executed as well as the Kingdom's diplomacy. In all international meetings it is the First Knight who represents Avalon and not the King.
Benefits
The First Knight is given accomodation in the Royal Palace very close to the King. It is a tradition that comes from the their initial role as the King's advisor. Several First Knights tried to change that when the King's role in government was shrinking, but it was decided to stick with tradition. Many people say the proximity to the King symbolizes being in the heart of the Kingdom.
Officially, there is no monetary pay for the First Knight. However, many First Knights were able to increase their wealth thanks to the immense political power that comes with the title. It is also said that some of them "transfered" money from the royal treasury to their own.
