Janali

Her Grace, Duchess Janali Galinos (a.k.a. Janali Jedalor)

I saw her working in the Anev shipyards, her clothes covered in grease and grime, and twin fires in her eyes as she built the Vibrius. She was glorious as she bent metal, machine, and man to her goals. When she spoke, every engineer around stopped to listen.
Captain Reinvo, book 1

You are certainly a lady of action, if not tact.
— Empress Alsenna Orsina Ventali, book 5

All I do is increase our knowledge. The only thing threatened by me is ignorance.
— Janali, book 4
Janali is the second daughter of House Jedalor, a noble trade house with blood relations to the Imperial House Vental. Janali is a recognized authority in astronomy, physics, and engineering, sometimes described as a polymath. She has been called the "mother of the observational sciences", the "mother of the scientific method", and the "mother of modern science".   She studied the relationship between speed and velocity, gravity and free fall, the principle of relativity, inertia, projectile motion and also worked in applied science and technology, describing the properties "hydrostatic balances", inventing the thermoscope and various military compasses, inventing and using the telescope for scientific observations of celestial objects. Her contributions to science include weight to lift ratios and formulas describing atmospheric density and pressure changes.   Janali's championing of science applied to all the natural world's properties is opposed by the Perlustrtion from within the Nacitas Church and from other scientists who desire to not be in conflict with the church. The matter was investigated by the Perlustrtion in 14337, which concluded that some professors had violated doctrine and formally censured Janali and vanishing the leading researcher on charges of heressy. Potentate Asonic reported that the Crelna professors "foolishly allowed the absurd philosophy to be researched suspecting and later proven to be heretical as it explicitly contradicted the Holy Scrolls in many places".   Janali did not defend herself at the time being very young. Later she defended her missing professor's views. She was again tried by the Perlustration, but was given a papal warrant allowing her to investigate without being convicted of heresy.

Family

Janali has an older sister (Cybele) 3 years older than her, an older brother (Bantu) 1 year older, plus Helena two years younger and an officer in the military with asperations to be the youngest General in history, Liona 10 years younger than her very business minded and as smart as Janali but with their mother’s wisdom beyond her years (also a little psychic), and a younger brother (Brianth) 9 years younger and pretty much Janali’s stubborn/smart/curious twin.   Janali's father is unknown, which is normal in Terra. Janali's mother is Lady Nunlea Jedalor.

Education

finished business school in the capital city of Vental 4 years ahead of her peers (age 12), went to Crelna to the Imperial University but transfered to the Crelna Institute for Science after the first year (age 13). Finished earning advanced scrolls in mathematics and physical sciences a year faster than norm (age 17). Returned home with ideas on creating a new trade home to become a House Mother.

Inventions/discoveries

  1. All objects accelerate at the same rate independent of their mass (age 17): Experimenting with balls of different sizes and weights, she rolled them down ramps with various inclinations. Her experiments revealed that all of the balls boasted the same acceleration independent of their mass.
  2. Introduced new method of first think about it, then write hypothesis, then think about how to prove or disprove it (age 16)
  3. Demonstrated that objects thrown in the air travel along a parabola.
  4. 5x telescope (age 18)
