S2 E6: The River People

General Summary

In which the party meets unexpected allies, encounters a race of frogling people called the Angulotl, and dodges the cops to bring the Luminous up to speed...
  • Making their escape from the scene of a variety of crimes, the party runs along with Trevor, the goliath animal handler, and the undead-looking clown who is humming unpleasantly to himself the whole time. Their escape seems to be headed towards the dog pens, but before they arrive, two drow attack Trevor from the shadows.
  • They dispatch Trevor and the party attacks them, but they make it clear they're not here to cross swords with the PCs: Instead they let them know "We're on your side you imbeciles" and also tell them "Don't go upstairs". They then head up the steps, into the dog pens, quiet as snowfall.
  • The PCs then go the long way, finding a hallway broken into by another more rustic passageway; at the end of this they find a curious gondola that is invisible in semidarkness but visible in light, a sort of tarnished brass thing that might hand from an air baloon or a ferris wheel, an enclosed octagon with a roof and a door but open windows on all sides. A simple mechanism is found and used to descend.
  • They ride it down to a flood drain area along the riverbank, a place originally designed to swallow the overflow should the river's depth rise abouve the floor stage, now clogged with rotten garbage and debris. They slip easily through the metal doors onto the strand, a sort of long stony shoreline just above the river's depth, cluttered with trash cast off from Herron Heights some 150' above - broken furniture, dirty clothes and broken dishware, suggesting that there may be some peril in standing around down here for fear of getting brained by some garbage getting tossed over.
  • While making their way along the shoreline they see that a number of the outcast class has collected here, as it's an unregulated section of town where technically any social class can go; they soon are met by a small Angulotl froglin fellow who starts off nicely enough but begins making himself a pest quite quickly, but heads away when they get the stink-eye of some shady-looking human and Hobgoblin Squalus collecting around a barrel fire - using trash for fuel, by the smell of it. They manage to avoid trouble and walk the strand into Ravenwick, from there climing the lower flint hills to and get up on the bridge, grabbing some drinks at a local tavern, the Devil's Dowry, and getting a night's rest as well
  • From there they make their way to the Chapel of Brogas, explaining what happened to Ellis, who says they have no Drow in the Luminous at all, to his knowledge; Drow assassins are simply too expensive to employ, and too callous to care about the plight of people who live on the surface. He is shocked at the revelation that Solara Nantez is a Succubus, and warns that she almost certainly will be back to cause more trouble, and to be careful as they are shapeshifters and might look like Solara or anyone else when they return. A pair of Watchmen show up, investigating a complaint about the pet Monitor Lizard that got loose two nights before that has, evidently, remained unsolved. Neither of these Watchmen seem to have been at the Coyle Daine crime scene, and after doing their normal amount of hassling, and asking questions that suggest they have their suspicions about this Chapel's loyalties, they move on.
  • The PCs plan to head back to the Beggar's Dice by separate routes in the morning, and from there pursue the other threads from the crime scene - The honey, the giant isopod-pillbug thing that came out of the wild man when he died, and the poker chips from the Dragonfly, which may help to explain the poker chips marked with beehives that no one seems to recognize.
