Telagris, the Maw
Telagris is a mutant beast– an Alza'Vir– created by the Ancient Elixir during The Shattering of Andromeda. During the Age of the Alza’Vir, Telagris feasted upon the scattered Androns who attempted to continue sailing the seas.
Telagris is a corrupted form of a Teraltian cephalopod. His tentacles are famed for possessing an inescapable grasp which drags sailors to their deaths. But the Maw is most prominently known for his mouth, filled with rows of sharp, jagged teeth.
The sea surrounding Telagris is filled with the bioluminescent algae, believed to be remnants of his shedded skin. At night, sailing Wayfinders know they are in dangerous waters when a ghostly green light fills the air. The waves settle, and the wind dies, as if nature itself fears the famous Alza’Vir.
Over the centuries, he became associated with legends about the Eye of Andromeda, seen as the final challenge to seekers of the magical paradise. The only sailor known to survive an encounter with Telagris is the Mad-Captain Alsen Seadancer.
Telagris is the end of many hero’s tales, such as Levana Starstrider, the Wayfinder famed for coming closest to putting the beast to rest. The Alza’Vir has slain many Wayfinders who traveled by boat.
Superstitions surround this Alza’Vir, and it is said that wearing the Eye of Andromeda carved into an amulet will repel this beast, as well as the others of the ocean. The Eye of Andromeda has become a symbol of protection from the Alza’Vir and their corruption, and a token of safe travels.
The Call of the Depths, a term describing the phenomena associated with looking out over a ship’s railing and feeling a desire to jump, is associated with Telagris, and it is said that the Maw awaits the foolish, hungering for those willing to give into their unnatural instincts– those that obey the Call.
