Writguard

The Writguard serve as Crodeux standing peacekeepers—uniformed men-at-arms charged with upholding the Archduke's law. Clad in blue-and-brass livery and bearing halberds or crossbows, they patrol markets, man gatehouses, and keep order within the city’s stone walls. Their authority derives from the written decrees of Crodeux's chancery, which are read aloud each fortnight in the squares.

They are not soldiers, and in times of true conflict they yield to the ducal retinue or the mercenary companies. Still, few citizens dare challenge a patrol of seasoned Writguard in the streets.

Ranks & Duties:

  • Watchmen patrol wards, resolve disputes, and detain petty criminals.
  • Serjeants oversee barracks and coordinate patrols, often long-serving veterans.
  • Marshals report to the city’s Reeve and may act on noble writs directly.

The Writguard that patrol by night are often refereed to as Lamplighters, charged with patrolling after dusk. Cloaked and lantern-bearing, they ensure the city’s lamps remain lit and are often the first to respond to fires, disturbances, or disappearances at night. It is said that Lamplighters know every shortcut, hidden door, and secret stair in Crodeux - and know why they do not pry deeply into such matters..

Common Beliefs:

  • Writguard take oaths before a block of stone said to have come from the old Imorean palace.
  • Some Lamplighters bear silver coins drilled and worn as pendants—unofficial tokens of honor for deeds done in the dark.
  • A few precincts are known to be "slow to act" especially when coin speaks louder than law.
