Sacrat

The Laughing God

"Alright," the captain huffed, leveling his cudgel as his men surrounded the thief on three sides, "You've led us on a merry chase, but you've nowhere to run. You've got one option, now just hand over the stolen goods and we'll see about lightening your sentence. No harm's been done yet." The woman, still a girl really, looked backward over the edge of the rampart wall behind her, looking thoughtful. "Well," she said, drawing the word out playfully, "that's not my only option, exactly, now is it?" Before the meaning of her words can fully sink in with the guards around her, she hops backward with a giggle, vanishing as gravity pulled her downward. Rushing forward with a curse, the captain made the ledge in time to see her hit the ground. The results didn't bear describing. "Why would she do that?" one of the younger guards asked no one in particular, sounding as if he might sick up. Spying something on the ground, the captain leaned over and picked up the woman's dropped necklace, the centerpiece a face frozen in laughter. "Because it's the last thing we would expect her to do," he said sourly.
Sacrat's worship is ostensibly allowed within cities, but open worshippers are watched carefully. This suits them just fine because it gives them more opportunities to surprise others. The Laughing God and his followers seek to sow Chaos; any form of expectation or rigid behavior patterns offends him, and those who worship him are quick to foil such. A worshipper of Sacrat will always argue against the popular opinion, point out the flaws in a proposed rule or law, and willingly risk harm to themselves to do exactly what those around them least expect. Thieves and other criminals often worship him, as their activities almost certainly gain his favor. A representative in a government who must argue an unpopular opinion or statute will sometimes invoke him in prayer as well, as they seek to overturn the perspectives of their philosophical opponents.   Sacrat holds a special place among the deities with regard to his age. Chaos needed no re-defining, and he was not required to deconstruct himself as part of the edict that precipitated the war between the new and old deities. What part he played for either side, if any, is unknown, but he is most likely the oldest being in existence.
