Lindum
The normally warm climate of Faloura starts to turn. Off in the distance a massive mountain range envelopes the horizon. Situated several miles away, and on the coast, a sprawling city churns out massive black plumes of smoke into the sky. As you close in on the front gate a heavy downpour of rain floods down. A massive white wall wraps around the city, stained black from years of soot. Next to the front gate, a second large gate with multiple sets of rails is guarded heavily. A distant rumble starts to draw rapidly closer as a loud whistle is let off and a massive metal train hurtles into the city. Inside the walls a multi layered city is connected by bridges and lifts, smaller trains run back and forth delivering goods to and from the many massive warehouses. Large factories with magical golems unload crates of goods onto carts that travel towards the harbour. The northwest corner of Faloura is home to the most industrialized town in all of Tel'estria run by the Brook Family, the city is the hub of technological innovation. The city is unlike any other in the known world, a thick grey cloud seems to always loom over the city, raining the soot that the massive factories churn out back down on the city. Because of this, Lindum is a bleak and grey city. Lindum's primary trade is in minerals that they pull out of the mountain range that sits serval miles away from the port. Using trains that are powered by magical motes drawn out of fire elementals, they are able to expediently transport the minerals to be processed in the city's many factories or moved to the harbour to be shipped out. Lindum is a strange city; their use of elementals in their technologies puts outsiders on edge as it’s well known elementals are temperamental and extremely dangerous. Harvesting them as a power source is widely regarded as reckless. This leads to a strange relationship with the other cities within Faloura, they are seen as dangerously obsessed with their pursuit of technological advancement meanwhile those within Lindum relish in the isolation allowing them to continue their work unimpeded by outside regulation. Jessica Brooke, the head of the family and the representative on the council, doesn’t do much to keep good ties with the Falouran Council instead she sees them as a means to an end, they are provided with security and finances as long as she plays nice. A sacrifice she's willing to make. The history of Lindum is storied; the city looks fairly new compared to the other cities in Faloura. It’s the oldest city in the country. Once a small mining port, it was destroyed after they dug too deep and discovered a massive fire giant city. Disturbing these monstrous creatures sewed great anger among the giants who, led by their king Monnus, left their mountain city to destroy the settlement. This attack was so destructive that the landscape around Lindum was forever changed, the old town was buried under the rubble from the fight. Now forgotten. and many years later, travelers from Soris looking to escape the empire landed on the shores of Faloura, picking up the mining town and starting anew. During the War of the Six Ports, a military family called the Brookes took charge of the army. After a successful campaign through the country the Brookes mounted an attack on Elbra, wiping the city and it’s people from the face of the world. Not long after the other families gathered to form the council and peace came to Faloura. The strong leadership that the Brookes showed during the war led to them finding their place as leaders of Lindum.
People of Lindum
⬏topThe people within Lindum don’t live extravagant lifestyles, the common folk live in crammed tenement buildings across the lower city. An average citizen within the walls either works at the docks or at one of the factories. Some work at the mines, however the majority of the workforce are convicts sent there from all across Faloura as punishment. Those who hold power in the city of Lindum live in what is known as The Gardens, these 5 spires that tower over the city house the 5 major families of Lindum.
Lay of the Land
⬏topThe City is broken up into four layers:
The Gardens
⬏topThe five gleaming towers of the Gardens form the highest layer of the city of Lindum. Compared to the gloomy layers below, the Gardens look like an idyllic paradise. Each of the giant gardens is enclosed in glass domes that protect the wealthy inhabitants from any foul air wafting below. The gardens are connected by a series of sealed steel-glass bridges that ensure the inhabitants never have to expose themselves to the open air. Many of the gardens have opulent mansions where the local nobility live, the largest of these gardens houses the Brooke family estate. They live on top of the city's tallest tower commanding a perfect view over the whole of Lindum. The Brooke family mansion may not be large compared to nobles from other cities, but the huge glass dome and extensive gardens make up for its absence in size.
Upper City
⬏topThe area known as Upper City is built above the worst of the smog that permeates the lower levels, this ensures the air is somewhat cleaner for its inhabitants. In order to keep the air fresh, the city has constructed giant turbines to suck polluted air out and pump clean air in. The entire Upper city is held up by titanic concrete and steel supports, which sometimes meld with the buildings underneath. This only adds to the gloom below, as the shade from the upper city makes the lower levels even more choked with smoke. It's in the Upper city that visitors from outside the city stay, and it's usually the only part of the city they see. Rarely will they see the conditions of the workers toiling below them, out of sight and out of mind. The Upper city itself is a marvel of engineering, countless rails criss cross the area carrying goods and people to their destinations, it's not unusual for citizens walking on the cobbled streets to see a train dart by above them as they go about their day. The Upper city is mainly known for its eccentric inventors and artificers, the area is dotted with shops opened by those that want to be responsible for the next great invention.
Lower City
⬏topThe Lower city is the industrial center of Lindum, it's the lowest surface level of the city, and it's wreathed in almost constant gloom. The factories work night and day, with constant shifts of workers ensuring the city never stops production. The smoke billowing from the factories chokes the streets, blanketing the tight alleys with smog, the sea mists that blow in from the ocean mix with the smoke to form a dark mist that blackens the lungs of its inhabitants. Any sun that could make it through is blocked by the Upper city, making it difficult to tell night from day in the deeper parts of the Lower City. The people here live in gigantic tenement buildings, so tall they touch the layer above, space is tight in these buildings forcing workers to live in cramped conditions. The factories are often the only ventilated buildings in the lower city, so many workers prefer to go to work purely to escape the choking fog. The best place to live is near the harbour, where the open air blows much of the smoke away, here it's common to see huge golems assisting in the transport of heavy goods. Huge lifts dot this area aiding in the movement of goods from the Grand station to the Harbour.
Old Lindum
⬏topMost of Old Lindum was destroyed in the past but a little remained now built underneath the new city. The remains of Old Lindum, it has become a massive slum with the new city's sewers built around it. Those who are unable to work due to a variety of factors live here. The walkways and paths narrowly avoid the canals and waterways which transports the waste of those above. The city still has a few old structures from the old days but is mostly wooden structures that were built haphazardly. Each alley is filled with people smoking Silil or drinking selfmade alcohol. The people of Old Lindum live harsh and sad lives, they are either fighting addiction or sickness.
The streets are run by a gang named The Kurdias, they run all the drugs and have a deep understanding of everything that happens in the streets of Old Lindum. Those who cross The Kurdias are put to the blade and either left maimed or dead.
