Kroll
Kroll are a sapient reptilian race that populates the warmer climates on Tarsis. Deceptively intelligent, they live in their own colonies and in some uncommon cases within human settlements where they serve in scientific or investagative roles. Fairly mercenary in nature, they are avaricious and will do near anything to increase their wealth, be that riches, artifacts, knowledge, or a combination thereof. There is a proportionally large number of shapers per capita of Kroll, leading to a good amount of shaper roles in society to be filled by these upright reptiles.
They believe themselves to be descendants of draconic beings, even though no evidence of any such ancestors having ever walked on Tarsis exists. Despite this, Kroll will insist on being descended from Dragons, likening their own love of wealth with that of those mythical beings.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Kroll are cold blooded reptiles that can stand upright when desired. They possess four limbs, each ending in sharp claws used for hunting and self defense. The hind limbs have adapted to allow Kroll to both stand on two or four limbs. Rather short and stubby for their body's size, the hind legs of a Kroll are nonetheless powerful, if slow when standing upright. Their fore limbs have developed into hands with opposable thumbs and squat, strong arms that can be used as legs when desired. With stubby digits on their hands, Kroll rely on their claws for fine manipulation.
The neck of a Kroll is heavily muscled and broad, stretching a foot from their shoulders and ending in a large head with a long snout. Small serrated teeth line their powerful jaws, and predator's eyes face forward and outward, granting them a 180° arc of vision. Their heads are broad, narrowing to a broad point at the tip of their snout. A thin tongue whips out and in to sample the air.
A streamlined oblong body forms the core of a Kroll, with narrow shoulders, a midsection that's several inches wider, and hips that are as wide as the shoulders. A long tail balances out a Kroll's figure, helping balance when standing upright. The skin of a Kroll is leathery and hangs a bit loosely toward its underside, leaving wrinkles along its neck and torso.
Genetics and Reproduction
Kroll fertilize and lay eggs to reproduce. A clutch will typically consist of one, maybe two, eggs, which will take between four to five weeks to hatch.
Growth Rate & Stages
Once hatched, a Kroll will grow rapidly for three weeks until they reach adolescence, where they reach half of their adult size and slow down their growth. At this stage, the Kroll is capable of hunting and/or working on its own and is expected to do so from its parents. From here it takes fifteen months until it can be considered an adult.
Ecology and Habitats
Kroll natively reside near the equatorial belt that runs through Nuulhammer and Flamehaven, though they have ventured further north and south to reside in mostly human settlements. Being cold blooded, those that go out from the equator will increasingly need maiga-powered heaters to maintain their body temperatures the further they go.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Obligate carnivores, Kroll eat deceptively little overall, though tend to eat in large quantities all at once, as much as forty pounds as adults. This meal will last them for five to ten days depending on its size.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Kroll form small familial units, typically a bonded pair and their children until they're old enough to go form their own families. Elders are revered and often become leaders in larger Kroll settlements.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Kroll have somewhat poor eyesight, so they use their senses of smell and taste to figure out their surroundings. They can still see, though are nearsighted and almost exclusively register movement past several feet. Those in more civilized areas might have taken to using corrective lenses to attempt a range of vision more akin to that of a human or guhr. Their sense of hearing is about on par with that of a human.
Civilization and Culture
Common Dress Code
Non-feral Kroll wear pants that cover their lower bodies and allow their tails to jut out as a minimum, though past that is up to individual taste. Robes, shirts, skirts, long coats, and more besides can be found adorning Kroll bodies. Their heads are not shaped well for hats, though some do try to wear them.
Common Myths and Legends
Legends passed down by the Kroll speak of a time when dragons roamed the land, collecting vast hoards of treasure and knowledge. While no evidence of dragons existing has been found, that hasn't stopped the Kroll from passing down the stories and attempting to find proof.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Kroll typically regard guhr as impatient and needlessly violent, while humans are relatively lazy and easy to get wealth out of in their eyes.
