Geoffri the Nearsighted

Mercenary in the 34th Wildspace Marines

One of two surviving members of the Wildspace Marines - 34th Battalion, a unit of Giff mercenaries that travelled to Tarien in order to participate in the Great War, Geoffri is at the bottom rung of his people's social and military hierarchy. While this means that he naturally follows the lead of his commanding officer it also means that he is accustomed to being the lowest ranked person in any given situation. As such, he is constantly leaping to follow orders - even if they are only ones that he infers someone might be giving. This all comes from the best intentions, of course, as Geoffri only wants to put his best foot forward and help out any way that he can. Unfortunately, to many, it has the appearance of over eagerness and some see it as a bit insincere. What's worse is that Geoffri is generally incompetent, meaning that he takes on tasks for which he imagines he might be asked and then completes them poorly or even in such a way as to make everything worse than it was before.

Much of his incompetence comes from his vision, though he would never admit it. Anything further than an arms-length away from Geoffri appears as a blur and he has been known to mistake others in his units for boulders and enemy ships for clouds. With his visual troubles, he is a hopeless shot. Coming from a culture that prides itself in its use of firearms this causes no end of embarrassment to him. He has, however, compensated for his visual challenges with a keen mechanical mind. As long as a device is close, Geoffri can disassemble, clean, repair, and re-assemble any sort of firearm or mechanical device. While this talent could prove valuable to his unit, he often focuses on his deficiencies in the actual use of such devices, despairing at his lack of talent. If only he could craft a device that fixed his vision.
