Damascus the Vintner

Elder Yatian Senator

Wrinkled like a grape left too long in the sun at his vineyard, Damascus is man of small stature and great ideals. His voice booms even at a whisper, commanding respect with its deep tenor and the precise cadence with which he speaks. He has been known to use this talent to hold the Yatian Senate hostage for entire sessions, discussing the virtues of various grape varieties to forestall discussion of a topic he finds distasteful.

Among those distasteful topics are the burgeoning notion of factions and the belief that politics could become a profession for a well spoken Yatian. Many find it odd that, given this belief, he returned to the city for a second turn as a senator after serving a decade ago. "I do this with a heavy heart," he decreed in the speech that launched his campaign "to prevent the opposition from gaining a stranglehold on our democracy with which they will surely and irrevocably tarnish it's sacred grandeur."

Truth be told, Damascus would prefer to return to his home in Mora where his vineyard, precariously on the edge of giant country, produces some of the finest wines in northwest Tarien. More cynical opponents have claimed that its not his ideas that have driven him from his vineyard but instead the frosty disposition of his wife of fifty years. They cite his tendency to frequent the same political events as many of the next generations young ladies, which have threatened to form their own faction, as evidence.
