Gshaan {Vrock} Species in Tariek Rough Collection | World Anvil

Gshaan {Vrock} (ɣiən̪ˠ)

These large beings almost look like rather large humans, till you see the hint of tusks protruding from their mouths, the red in their eyes, and their slight blue-green tinge to their skin. The Gshaan are common enough, if seen as odd, and have come to be called 'Vrock' by those whom struggle with their tongue, though the reason as to why is lost to time. They are strong, fierce and proud. They oft ally with man, dwarf, halfling, elf, man, and tiefling. Indeed they are only race who not only accepts, but embraces tiefling kind, though they are wise enough to hold careful sway to that acceptance, requiring proof not only of 'yer strangeness' but also that you are of sound mind. But stand with them? Absolutely to fight all manner of beast. Gnomes however are known to be wildly distrusting of Vrock kind and the feeling is mutual.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Gshaan, though seen as valuable allies, don't really fully fit in to Human, Viid or Feykka society. They are seen as...not complete outcasts, but...different. This treatment where they are treated as kind of, in some ways second class citizens, helps lead to a bit of a wanderlust and a hunger to make a statement. To prove themselves. To that end, many take to the military life, or mercenary life. Vrock are few in number, and have no real land or nation, but they do hold an odd small exception. The Ironfist Vrock. Famous across Valerick this one tribe merely a thousand strong, whom call Raechin their home, stand as a reminder of their value, for they are skilled warriors, with no fear, no quit, and will fight alongside any man, regardless of race, whom willingly calls Chaos their enemy. Vrocks all take this stance, for it is their heritage, but Raechin is the place most accepting, due to this strong clan, one of the last of the Vrock, the natives whom this land belonged to long ago, before the black elves rise and fall. These people are slowly dying, it is believed they only outnumber Tieflings and Elves across Valerick. Their time passed, like the, Feykka and Viid before them, but unlike those other races, they have not reached the turning point, and have not yet begun to rise again.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

They stand as a culture of brawny, bonny, wandering warriors, their homeland lost to them. Waston used to be their ancestral homeland and that they remember. But now they make their home where they can, a wandering race lacking a connection to their homeland.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Vrocks, similarly to dwarves, are loyal, honorable and damn vicious and stubborn. Culturally they even have similar traditions, and one such tradition is the that of the Berserk. Like a Slayer, this is an oath sworn to die, and is only taken by those that feel they have a great stain to wash from their honor. Unlike Slayers though, Berserks fight with a fury unbridled, determined to die as a storm to the enemy. It isn't about finding a worthy beast. Its about killing as many Children of Chaos as one can before their demise. To die in any less of a way but cutting into a horde of greenskin, a herd of beastmen, or a war band of Joten is considered to not have honored your oath.

History

None, not even the Vrock, truly know how old their kind are, though it is believed they are the ancient remains of some long forgotten culture. This is because they are the victims of oppression and genocide. Vrocks are looked upon by many on Valerick with healthy respect given their reputation as fierce warriors. Of all races, they can get along with most. Gnomes however, are inherently totally mistrusting of the large folk, and the feeling is mutual. Neither race will discuss it openly anymore, as it is considered a grave insult to the other. But the mass graves hidden in deep in the southern jungles of the continent will paint a pretty clear picture if one knows where to look. The Vrock were once a race of slaves and prisoners, held that way by every race, but it was gnomes with their massive technological advantages and scientific knowledge, that did it. And slavery was but the beginning. No one, not even elven history, remember why the gnomish people behaved this way, committing organized mass genocide of the Vrock peoples. However it is known that eventually the big folk had enough and fought back. Every other race and nation had more or less released them, given them citizenship, and outlawed slavery. Mora stood as the only other exception besides Waston. Something the gnomes did pushed it over the edge, and the result in the jungles, mass graves of tens of thousands of gnomes tell a grim story of returning the favor. Both races are now struggling populations, though the gnomes thus far are faring better, as despite the mass killings, their numbers were still better than those of the Vrock.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

They get along quite well with any race except gnomes. Gnomes they will openly distrust, and are openly racist towards. That gap can be crossed, if the gnome can acknowledge what their people did and convince the Vrock that they earnestly and truly believe it was a terrible and evil thing. But not many gnomes willingly do such a thing, for it is not well taught within their culture. They focus on burying those actions, making it sound like it 'was only some indentured servitude, enslavement was for criminals only, and we certainly didn't kill them en masse' and that 'We freed them when they asked and protested, but years later they started killing and slaughtering our people wholesale, like the murderous scum they are.' Needless to say this makes things tense and it is not unheard of for racial conflict to break out in places where Gnomes and Vrock may share space. It is less common in other nations as those born their receive a more thorough education of events, or none at all in rural areas. But in Waston, it is still very much a major problem.
