Tolsta

Tolsta is a small island approximately six miles off the west coast of the kingdom of Cannis, on the continent of Tanera. It measures approximately 7 miles between its eastern and westernmost points, and approximately 10 miles from northern to southernmost points.   Tolsta is the second largest island in the Fallen Isles archipelago and by far its most densely populated. A single city, sharing the island's name, covers the land coast to coast. The streets are tightly packed and labyrinthine, sometimes over more than one level, the result of a steadily increasing population fighting to grow in the limited space. There is also an extensive network of subterranean passages beneath the city; ancient streets which have subsequently been built on, and are now partially used as a sewage system.   The land slopes gently upward to a single peak at the north of the island, at the top of which sits the home of the island’s ruler. It is currently occupied by Lord Iona Durrell, who has held the position for around three years, inheriting it following the death of her brother Jura Durrell.   Tolsta thrives primarily due to its geographical location. The closest of the islands to mainland Tanera, it is perfectly placed as a stepping stone for trade and travellers making their way between the other islands and Cannis. As such, it counts members of all races amongst its population. It is, of course, home to seafarers of all types; despite its small size the island has three ports, and almost every citizen has some knowledge of sailing.   Otherwise, Tolsta is like any other bustling city, with taverns, markets, a healthy criminal underbelly and several temples. The only thing it lacks is educational establishments: anyone wishing to pursue formal study must travel to one of the neighbouring islands (usually Ulna, which has a highly reputable magical library and academy), or the mainland.   Tolsta currently has temples to the sea deities Eadro, Trishina and Persana, and the goddess of trade and travel, Avandra.
