There are six islands in the archipelago: Aird, Tolsta, Stroma, Skall, Kimber and Ulna. Numerous deities are worshipped throughout the Fallen Isles. So many, in fact, that it is common for individuals to worship several at once, and even to change allegiance often and without stigma. Deities rise and fall in popularity with surprising frequency, becoming ‘fashionable’ for a few years before dropping out of favour, which may be related to a constantly evolving population and a high number of immigrants. Popular folklore has it that the archipelago was formed after an ancient god enviously tried to steal land from another, carrying it away in their cupped hands. Bits of land slipped through the god’s fingers as they ran, falling into the sea and becoming islands. Religious worship on the islands being what it is, the names of the gods involved have long been lost. The rulers of the inhabited islands are known collectively as the Lords of the Isles, each fiercely protective of their power and property and prone to squabbling with their fellow Lords. However, as the prosperity of each island is tied so thoroughly to their continued alliance, these squabbles rarely become serious and mostly have no effect on the everyday lives of ordinary citizens.
