Maria and Jacob first met when Jacob's family fled to Markarth during the Great War, and they fell in love almost instantly. When they realized they had conceived a child together, they quickly married so as not to attract their respective parents' ire. Shortly thereafter, their first child, Jenavive Terallia, was born. During the Markarth Incident, they and their families worked to try and ensure more blood did not spill, and this experience brought them even closer together.
Then, in late 4E 175, Jacob and his family, new and old, moved back to the Imperial City to begin rebuilding after the war, along with an unexpected new member, as Maria did not realize she was pregnant with their second child, Jeovanni Terallia, who was born at the end of Frostfall.
In 178, their second daughter Gisella Terallia was born, and in 180 came Jessa Terallia. Another surprise arrival came in Rain's Hand 4E 182 with the birth of twins Katelinne Terallia and Jovious Terallia, and two years later Yjanna Terallia was born. After their youngest, Juniper Terallia, was born in 4E 190, Maria gave Jacob an ultimatum: Sleep in a different room, or undergo magical sterilization. Jacob chose the latter.
