Zenith Fish

Written by CrazyJack

The Zenith fish is a rare sight in the dark rivers and streams of Mirkireth, and was fished near to extinction by the native Paédor until Kel'vak (Paédor word for chief or ruler) Brenzik banned the fishing of Zenith throughout Mirkireth in 3A. 903, although many clans ignored this decree and continued, and subsequently killing off the species in some areas.   The Zenith fish is small, growing no larger than a hand length, and they are known to live up to 15 years. The fish is known to be beautiful, with long flowing fins that glow with intense colour depending on the situation the fish is in. The Zenith glows purple when in a calm and tranquil state, in slow moving dark waters most commonly. Red when it is in danger, and blue when mating. The fish is thought to have magical properties, which can affect onlookers, who may become entranced with the fish, and experience a strange euphoria and strong desire to protect the fish at any cost. This has lead many scholars to believe this magic may act as a defense mechanism. The fish are desirable to collectors, particularly mages, and there is considerable poaching activity in Mirkireth in the modern day.   Zenith fish have never been witnessed laying eggs in recorded memory, the number of offspring they produce is therefore unknown. They are also highly solitary, and only gather in small numbers to mate. The main predator of the fish is the Telvek Piranha.
